The chemical industry has grown to become one of the largest manufacturing industries in the world, with sales estimated in the year 2000 to be well in excess of 1500 billion dollars. Some projections indicate an increase in the number of commercially available chemicals in the immediate future, with the possibility that they will be administered in smaller but more potent doses. 

Projected emissions from manufacturing industry were estimated from a combination of a bottom-up survey by ICF/BOC and top-down modelling of energy demand by ESRI.

This approach demands reassessment of the design requirements for particular projects. Particularly useful in project-based industries, the aim is to focus on manufacturing issues at an early stage in the design cycle.
