Programmable logic device

PLCs originated in the car industry in the 1970s where programmable logic devices were used to do repetitive tasks. Within the pharmaceutical industry, their use has evolved over the past 20 years as their processing power has increased. Complex nonrepetitive tasks are now routinely performed, and as a consequence PLCs are now used to control the majority of medium-sized manufacturing facilities. The worldwide market for PLCs has been estimated to be on the order of 3 billion. [Pg.587]

A set of PCB (printed circuits boards) based on PLD (programmable logic devices) act as the interface between the embedded PC system, the encoders, and the DC motors. The interface between the PLD boards and the PC is carried out by the parallel port. [Pg.62]

Interface Control Level This control level is restricted to strategies of control associated with the interfaces of the sensor and actuators. The strategies at this level are implemented by the hardware through PLD (Programmable Logic Devices). [Pg.210]
