While estrus cycle data on rats appeared to be negative, there were significant dose-related reductions in plasma progesterone levels on 36-week diets containing 75 to 150 ppm Aroclor 1242. Rat ovaries showed characteristic changes in stromal cells and reduced follicle numbers. 

Kushwaha et al. (1991) determined the effect of oestrogen and progesterone on plasma cholesterol concentrations and on arterial lesions in ovarectomized and hysterectomized baboons fed a high-cholesterol/high-saturated-fat diet.

In general most steroids of clinical interest can be measured in saliva. For some steroids, such as cortisol, estriol, and progesterone, the measurement of the sahvary concentration appears to be a reliable indicator of the free concentration in plasma. For others (e.g., testosterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, estradiol, and aldosterone) the chnical usefulness of salivary measurements has not yet been fully established.
