The ion-exchange disks are available from a number of manufacturers (Table 6.1 and Appendix Product Guide). The disks typically have from 0.2 to 0.4 meq/disk (47 mm) exchange capacity. The disks manufactured by 3 M (Empore disks) are made from a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer therefore, they do not have the problem of the silica-based disks with limited pH range. The Empore disks also come in a chelation disk for the removal of trace metals from solution, as well as in strong anion-exchange form (Fig. 6.1). 

A specific application of environmental SPE is sample preparation of extra-large volumes (from 10 to 100 L). This work was pioneered in the early 1970s by Junk and co-workers (1974) for the analysis of trace organic compounds in water using styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers (XAD-2 resin from Rohm and Haas) and by Thurman and Malcolm (1981) and Leenheer and Stuber (1981) for the analysis of natural organic substances in water (humic substances). One can obtain the XAD resins from Supelco (Appendix Products Guide) and still follow the protocol of this early work for the isolation of contaminants and humic substances from large volumes of water (10-1000 L of water). 

There is currently a company that has commercially made a device that both filters and passes a water sample through a series of columns of XAD resin (Axys, see Product Guide, Appendix). The device is specifically designed for the analysis of ultra-trace levels of PCBs, DDT, and dioxin in natural waters. Literally, 100 L of water may be rapidly passed through the...
