These agents are most useful in states of mineralocorticoid excess, due either to primary hypersecretion (Conn s syndrome, ectopic ACTH production) or to secondary aldosteronism (from heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, and other conditions associated with diminished effective intravascular volume) (Table 15-4). Use of other diuretics, like thiazides or loop agents, can cause or exacerbate volume contraction and thus intensify secondary aldosteronism. In the setting of enhanced mineralocorticoid secretion and continuing delivery of Na+ to distal nephron sites, renal K+ wasting occurs. Potassium-sparing diuretics of either type may be used in this setting to blunt the K+ secretory response. [Pg.366]

The economic loss term includes two types of losses i) economic loss associated with failed equipments that have not been repaired (for example, a fouled heat exchanger can continue operating but at reduced heat transfer rate, ii) economic loss due to imavailability of equipment during repair time. The economic loss is calculated as a loss rate ( per day) multiplied by the duration of the period within which the loss is realized. The types of problems a fired heater or furnace system typically encounter include flame impingement on tubes, coke buildup inside the tubes, hot spots inside the furnace, fuel composition changes, burner flameout, control valve failure, and feed-pump failure. Other problems may include incorrect temperature indicator readings, failure of oxygen analyzers, oxygen leaks on the furnace, and the unexpected shutdown of downstream equipment. A fired heater system is designed to run almost continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A Weibull distribution is a generalized distribution, as each type of product population provides different types of information about the life of the product, and different life data analysis method may vary. It is quite normal that life will be in unit of time but it may not be the case always, for example, life of lubrication in automobile is dictated by kilometers miming of the vehicle and not in time units. Time is a common measure of life, so often referred to as times-to-failure. There could be different (e.g., three) types of life data, each type provides different information about the life of the product with complete data, the exact time-to-failure for the unit is known (e.g., the unit failed at 100 h of operation). With suspended or right censored data, the unit operated successfully for a known period of time and then continued (or could have continued) to operate for an additional unknown period of time (e.g., the unit was still operating at 100 h of operation).With interval and left censored data, the exact time-to-failure is unknown but it falls within a known time range [5] . Based on statistical methods, characteristic parameters are calculated to fit a life disnibution to a patticulat data set.
