Process aids mechanisms

In addition to lowering the interfacial tension between a soil and water, a surfactant can play an equally important role by partitioning into the oily phase carrying water with it [232]. This reverse solubilization process aids hydrody-namically controlled removal mechanisms. The partitioning of surface-active agents between oil and water has been the subject of fundamental studies by Grieser and co-workers [197, 233]. [Pg.485]

Natural rubber displays the phenomenon known as natural tack. When two clean surfaces of masticated rubber (rubber whose molecular weight has been reduced by mechanical shearing) are brought into contact the two surfaces become strongly attached to each other. This is a consequence of interpenetration of molecular ends followed by crystallisation. Amorphous rubbers such as SBR do not exhibit such tack and it is necessary to add tackifiers such as rosin derivatives and polyterpenes. Several other miscellaneous materials such as factice, pine tar, coumarone-indene resins (see Chapter 17) and bitumens (see Chapter 30) are also used as processing aids. [Pg.284]

In conclusion, it may be said that a lot of literature has been published that favors the Frye and Horst mechanism of stabilization. Most of this is based on studies done on low-molecular weight model compound for al-lylicchlorines in PVC, i.e., 4-chloro-2-hexene. Although the large contribution of these studies toward understanding the mechanism of stabilization of PVC cannot be denied, the extrapolation of these results to the processes involved in the actual stabilization of the polymer should be done with extreme care. The polymer represents a complex mixture of macromolecules, which in the melt is not only physically a very different system compared to the low-molecular weight model compound, but invariably contains, apart from stabilizers, other additives, such as plasticizers, lubricants, processing aids, etc., that further complicate the situation. The criticism of the Frye and Horst mechanism is also based on solid experimental evidence, and hence, the controversy is still very much alive. [Pg.327]

A considerable amount of work has already been successfully carried out in HASETRI with naturally occurring oils as eco-friendly process oils in conventional tire recipes [31,32]. These naturally occurring oils were found to be suitable on the basis of low PCA content. Some of the naturally occurring oils showed better processing properties, polymer-filler interaction, and dispersion properties in NR-based truck tire tread cap compound and hence better mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. As the presently available low PCA oil in the market in the form of MES TDAE and naphthenic oil are comparatively costly, these natural oils can act as the best alternative processing aids for the elastomer industry, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. [Pg.1033]

The research on the processes of mechanical destruction in deformed polypropylene (PP) melts was conducted with the aid of stable radical (tripentachlorphenylmethyl) consumption. There was defined the dependence of radical generation rate on shear rate. At low values y it is approximate to linear. [Pg.183]

Processing aids are added to improve the processing characteristics of a material. They may increase the rheological and mechanical properties of a melted material. Acrylate copolymers are often utilized as processing aids. [Pg.492]

The dynamic mechanical behavior of most homogeneous and heterogeneous solid and molten polymeric systems or composite formulations can be determined by DMA. These polymeric systems may contain chemical additives, including fillers, reinforcements, stabilizers, plasticizers, flame retardants, impact modifiers, processing aids, and other chemical additives, which are added to the polymeric system to impart specific functional properties and which could affect the process-ability and performance. [Pg.203]

The discussed mechanisms represent a form of intramolecular catalysis of the oxidation of the FeII(CN)5 or Run(edta) centers by the Ruii(NH3)5 moiety. The first two moieties react sluggisly and, on the other hand, the electron in RuII(NH3)5 is readily accessible to the external oxidant and is given up. The rapid electronic isomerization processes aid in the consumption of the full oxidation process. This is not truly catalytic because the catalyst is the reactant itself, which, of course, is consumed in the reaction. A better description involves a net oxidation of the FeII(CN)5 or Run(edta) sites through activation by the facile intramolecular electron transfer between the metal centers. The mechanism is described in Fig. 23, bearing some resemblance to the classical chemical mechanism for inner sphere electron... [Pg.119]

Several processes are used to enhance the filtration process itself. They may also be related processes in their own right. They include washing of solids, cake dewatering, pretreatment of suspensions (addition of inert filler aids), mechanical squeezing of cakes, electro-kinetic effects (Table 1). and magnetic separation. [Pg.634]

Chronic infections such as HIV result in immunosuppression as a result of induction of CD4+ Treg cells. Increased risk of Kaposi s sarcoma, non-Hodgkin s lymphoma and liver cancer is associated with long-term infections such as HIV. Immunosuppression in HIV-infected individuals occurs before the development of AIDS, which proceeds before the depletion of CD4+ T cells, and the induction of Treg cells may play a role in this process. The mechanisms are IL-10-independent and include the involvement of TGF-(3 secreted via signaling through cell-cell interaction involving CTLA-4. [Pg.221]

Many polymeric plasticisers, impact modifies, and processing aids for PVC are incorporated into the PVC by mechanical mixing Many of these, including butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers chlori-... [Pg.129]

PPE is a key component of several blends. It is totally miscible with sPS and can interact with polar polymeric components, for instance polyamides (through hydrogen bonding interactions between PPE oxygens and amidic NH) and other condensation polymers moreover, other important properties are improved by PPE, such as mechanical properties (entry 1), and a better control of crystallinity is obtained (see Section 4.1.1 for discussion). PPE also acts as a processing aid, improving the melt flowability [15]. [Pg.438]

In applications to sausage products which are produced in cellulose casings, the coagulation of surface proteins is an essential functional effect of smoke solutions. While the above mentioned carbonyl-amine reaction is one of two mechanisms of surface modifications, the acidity of natural smoke flavourings is an even more valuable processing aid for meat surface protein coagulation. [Pg.298]
