Procedures for biological evaluations

Ideally, materials for medical and paramedical applications should be tested or evaluated at three level (1) on the ingredients used to make the basic resin, (2) on the final plastic or elastomeric material, and (3) on the final device. Organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, the U.S.A. Standard Institute, and the American Society for Testing and Materials (F4 Committee) have developed toxicity testing programs for materials used in medical apphcations. The American Dental Association has recommended standard procedures for biological evaluation of dental materials [74]. [Pg.151]

Apart from syntheses aimed at producing substances for biological evaluation, which will be discussed later, most work in this area has employed aldehydes rather than ketones. Acidic conditions must be avoided during the isolation of the alcohols, since ethers are readily formed.47,76 In the great majority of cases the alcohol has been successfully reduced by the lithium aluminum hydride-aluminum chloride method to which we have already referred. Halogen substituents on the thiophene ring (even iodine) survive this procedure. The methods of synthesis discussed in the preceding sections are not suitable for the preparation of unsymmetric dithienylmeth-anes with free thiophene a-positions, and it is for these substances that the... [Pg.98]

As biopharmaceuticals are potentially contaminanted with possibly harmful viruses and allergenic and pyrogenic acting endotoxins as residual components of their host cell, guidelines and directions have been issued by the FDA s Center for Biologies Evaluation and Research (CBER) requesting validated procedures for virus and endotoxin removal and inactivation. [Pg.37]

The only commonly used radioisotope in this class is used in small (- IS.S MBq (500 -lCi) injected dose) quantities as a diagnostic for the evaluation of thyroid function. The compound is adininistered as Nal and these procedures are only possible owing to the favorable biological distribution of iodide. Up to 25% of the entire injected dose of iodide is accumulated in the thyroid with a very slow washout the rest is rapidly excreted in the urine. No other compound exhibits so high a ratio of concentration in a target tissue to that of other tissues. [Pg.477]
