Private cycles

AH motor fuel in the United States is manufactured by private companies. Many of these are vertically integrated. That is, the same company finds the cmde oil or buys it from a producing government, refines it into finished products, and then sells to independent retailers who specialize in that company s blended products or sells at company operated service stations. There are also a significant number of companies that participate in only some aspects of the business cycle such as refining or marketing.

Financial markets value companies. The cycle of equity markets measured as a multiple of the current EBITDA performance of a company is important, as it influences the value and the timing of exits for financial sponsors. The availability of debt markets is equally important because LBOs require sophisticated debt financing arrangements. Conditions in both equity and debt markets have an impact on private equity investments.

In the 1980s, fundamental changes took place in the state-owned sector with the so-called privatization of the industry. First in Chile, then in the UK, the assets of the publicly-owned electricity authorities were vested in companies which issued equity shares to the general public. This change in ownership was coupled with a fundamental shift in the way electricity was produced and sold. New, cheaper, technologies such as gas-fired, combined cycle, gas turbine plant, which could be built more quickly than the traditional coal-fired steam turbine plant, and which is less labour intensive in its operation, was introduced extensively in the UK. The separate producers of electricity competed with each other on price (per kWh) to win market share. It is alleged, with some justification in the UK, that such competition has reduced the price to the end-user. 

A partnership between universities, private industry and national laboratories has been established to identify and test high temperature materials and designs for NHI heat exchangers and other system interface components. Tlie work performed by this partnership will identify candidate materials, and perform corrosion and physical property tests necessary for NHI heat exchangers and process equipment needed for thermochemical cycles and high temperature electrolysis. 

The service-life of a conventional flooded battery under the harsh operating scheme in taxis, i.e., extended periods of standstill with lights and other equipment switched on, is only 6-12 months in Europe. In high-temperature climates, this may be even shorter. Taxi operation generates much more cycling of the battery than is found for the same type of car in private use, and this results in a tremendous reduction in battery life. Field tests with AGM batteries have shown an extension of taxi-duty life by a factor of 2 3 over flooded batteries. Therefore, a major European manufacturer has equipped all new taxis with AGM batteries since 2001.
