Principles of Integration

Notice that the expansion for the cosine contains only even powers of x, which is expected since cos(— x) = cosx, and this is only true for even powers the expansion for the sine contains only odd powers of x. [Pg.27]

Sometimes the Taylor series only converges for a specific domain of x values. For example, the Taylor series expansion of ln(l + x) (Problem 2-7) only converges for 1 1 1. There are even bizarre functions which do not converge at all to their Taylor series expansions. In practice, however, such pathological cases are almost never encountered in physics or chemistry problems, and Taylor series expansions are a very valuable tool. [Pg.27]

Just as logarithms and exponentials are inverse operations, integration is the inverse of differentiation. The integral can be shown to be the area under the curve in the same sense that the derivative is the slope of the tangent to the curve. The most common applications of integrals in chemistry and physics are normalization (for example, adjusting a probability distribution so that the sum of all the probabilities is 1) and calculation of the expectation values of observable quantities. [Pg.27]

This expression is called the integral of f(x) from xi to X2. The / sign signifies an integral. The upper limit is written above the integral sign the lower limit is below. [Pg.28]

Usually, however, we would prefer to have an explicit functional form for the integral. Since integration is the inverse operation of differentiation, this means that to integrate /(x) we need to find a function whose derivative is fix). This new function is called the antiderivative. The difference between the values of this antiderivative function at the two extreme limits of the area gives the value of the integral. For example, we already showed (Equation 2.3) that the derivative of x3 is 3x2, so x3 is an antiderivative of 3x2. Thus we have  [Pg.28]

The principle of integral process development [26] covers much more than just the optimization of a process. This approach begins with computer-aided decision procedures in the conception phase. Tools are available in which the process structure is suggested, for example should the process be a batch or a continuous operation The software tool for process synthesis PROSYN uses databases which include knowledge of experts, material data and calculation models for unit operations. Interfaces to process simulation tools such as ASPENPLUS and material databases are also supplied. PROSYN also delivers an economic evaluation of the future production process. [Pg.509]

Regulation is still largely based on media interests, e.g. water pollution, air pollution, etc. Because of this it is quite conceivable that over-regulation for one environmental medium may cause a transfer of pollution potential to another environmental medium. To some extent this has been addressed under the principle of Integrated Pollution Control, but this form of... [Pg.149]

Here we adopt the principle of integration of sub-systems. We do not consider the heat integration of the reactor loop with the liquid separation system for controllability reasons. The excess of heat can be exported to the utility network, eventually to be reimported as steam for the distillation section at adequate pressure levels. [Pg.647]

Let us illustrate the principle of integral thermodynamic characteristics of chemical equilibrium in mixed solvent based on the example of ionic association process of methylsulfuric acid HSO3CH3 and its tetraalkylammonium salt CH3(C8H 7)jN + OSO3CH3 in mixed solvent - methanol - n-butanol. The dependencies of ionic association constants for these electrolytes on temperature and permittivity are described by equations based [9.56] the relationship ... [Pg.561]

Other areas discussed include the classification of pesticides by degree of toxicity and danger, the system of research and regulation in the USSR, and the principle of integrated standardization of pesticide content of food, water, and atmospheric air. The review concludes with a look at certain prospective trends in the search for and development of pesticides that have selective action on target organisms but are harmless to human health and the environment. [Pg.122]

There are many variations of the principle of integrating spheres for both the monobeam mode and the double-beam mode. An example of the latter is given in Fig. 4-52. [Pg.159]

EQOS is looking to build the Microsoft Commercial Internet Pipeline (CIP) technology into the solution. The CIP would enable a standard method of sharing any type of business critical data using the Internet, e-mail or third-party Virtual Added Networks (VANs). This solution would allow all 4000 of Sainsbury s suppliers to strive towards the ECR principles of integrated supply and demand. [Pg.193]
