Methylsulfuric acid

Transfer ca 1.0 accurately weighed, of the filtered dried expl oil (from the ether extraction into a tared 100-ml beaker. Add 10 ml of freshly prepd methylsulfuric acid (obtd by gradually adding, under the hood, 5 ml of coned sulfuric acid to 5ml of pure methanol, while stirring and keeping the temp below 40°C). 

Methylsulfuric acid is an oily water-soluble liquid. It is a strong irritant to skin, eyes, and mucous tissue. Ethylsulfuric acid is likewise an oily liquid and a strong tissue irritant. Sodium ethylsulfate is a hygroscopic white crystalline solid.

Methylsulfuric acid alkalized with aq. 42%-NaOH at 17-26° during 80-100 min., soda ash and xylene (or toluene) added, water distilled off at 86-112° during 2 hrs., pyrocatechol, soda ash, and veratrol added to the cold mixture, water and xylene (or toluene) removed at 170°, and the residue heated 3-3.5 hrs. at 170-175° with stirring -> guaiacol.
