Prevention of major accidents due to fires and explosions

At the other side of the spectrum we find the risks of large-scale or major accidents, such as a fire or explosion in a chemical plant or a nuclear power-plant melt-down. We are here speaking of accidents that may result in multiple fatalities inside and outside the plant and extensive material or environmental damage. A major accident may threaten the survival of the [Pg.83]

Let us analyse how these barriers coincide with Ffaddon s strategies. Oil and gas processing is inherently hazardous due to the presence of flammable hydrocarbons in the process. It is thus not possible to prevent the build-up of energy or to modify its characteristics. An important measure is to limit the amount of oil and gas in the process, for example by dividing the process into separate units, and to isolate these from each other in case of a process upset. [Pg.84]

The uncontrolled release of oil and gas is prevented primarily by different means  [Pg.84]
