Pressure drop. Packed towers are designed so that the pressure drop at any point in the tower does not exceed a recommended maximum value. Maximum pressure drop criteria for packed towers are listed in Table 8.4. For vacuum distillation, foaming systems, and where fan horsepower needs to be minimized, the pressure drop criteria frequently set tower diameter. [Pg.508]

Note that no derating was used here. The previous flood calculation was derated because of the foaming tendency at high pressure. This is not taken into account in the interpolation, which is based on data at lower pressure. Packed vs Plate Columns. Satisfactory sebacoyl chloride can be purchased from the Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, New York. The submitters prepared it as follows. A mixture of 150 g. (0.74 mole) of sebacic acid and 150 ml. of thionyl chloride is heated in a water bath at 60°. The acid gradually goes into solution with evolution of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride. When gas evolution ceases, the mixture is distilled as rapidly as possible under reduced pressure. The yield of sebacoyl chloride, b.p. 171-175°/15 mm., is about 140 g. (79%). In 1976, Meluch and Campbell at General Motors obtained a patent10 for a steam hydrolysis depolymerization of PUR. High-pressure steam hydrolyzes flexible PUR foams rapidly at temperatures of 232-316°C to form diamines and polyols. The diamines are distilled and extracted from the steam and the polyols are obtained from the hydrolysis residue.
