Zinc Pyrithione is mainly used as a preservative in cosmetics the addition rates vary between 0-025 and 0-1%. In the EC list of preservatives allowed the micro-bicide is mentioned with a maximum authorized concentration of 0-5%, however,... 

It may be used as a preservative for the in-can/in-tank protection of aqueous functional fluids including jet fuel and cosmetics. Also with the application of Pyrithione disulphide coloration risks as described under Section 11.1.3 for Sodium Pyrithione have to be taken in consideration. The EC positive list of preservatives for cosmetics mentions Pyrithione disulphide for use in products rinsed off with a maximum authorized concentration of 0-2%. The addition rates for the preservative vary between 0 06 and 0-2%. 

As a preservative for the protection of cosmetic products Zinc Pyrithione is applied in concentrations in general variing between 0.025 and O.P/o. In the EEC Cosmetic Directive the microbicide is mentioned with a maximum authorized concentration of 0.5%i, however, with the limitation authorized only in products rinsed off, forbidden in products for oral hygiene. Percentage of use in US cosmetic formulations 0.14%. 

Some important exampies of dry film preservatives include benzimidazoles such as carbendazim, octylisothiazolinone, carbamates and dithiocarbamates such as thiram, zinc pyrithione and chlorotha-lonil. Representative exampies are shown in Figure 5.23. As with in-can preservatives, the optimum use ievels should be determined by experiments.
