Prepreg processing materials

The mechanical properties of FRP composites are dependent upon the ratio of fibre and matrix material, the mechanical properties of the constituent materials, the fibre orientation in the matrix, and ultimately the processing and methods of fabrication, which are the subject of Part II. Chapters discuss prepreg processing, liquid composite moulding (LCM), filament winding processes and pultrusion of advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. 

Use a wet resin and dry fiber, if appropriate to the process. This method reduces the cost of filament winding. In Ref. 38, the cost for the large MX lannch canister wet filament wound by Hercules in the 1990-95 time period was 45.00/lb— less than the cost of just the prepreg tape material for many composite parts.

The function of the resin matrix material in filament-wound structures is to help distribute the load, maintain proper fiber position, control composite mechanical and chemical properties, and provide interlaminar shear strength. Either a thermosetting or a thermoplastic resin material may be selected. Thermosetting resins may be selected for application in a wetwinding process or as part of a prepreg resin system.
