The quality characteristics of medicinal products and quaUty objectives of a preparing pharmacy or manufacturer are generally and sometimes in detail covered by European and national legislation and guidelines. A quality system for medicinal products will therefore have to connect with the appropriate legislation and professional guidelines that are meant to support their quality. 

By the thirteenth century AD, essential oils were being produced along with medicinal and herbal preparations in pharmacies. Around this time improvements in distillation techniques were made, in particular the development of the alembic apparatus, which would eventually estabUsh the quaUty of such matenals. As a result, many of the essential oils in use today are denved from those produced in the sixteenth and seventeenth centunes in terms of odor character, even though production methods have continued to evolve. The current practice of aroma therapy is an indication of this common root of medicinal and fragrance chemistry.

In the mid-nineteenth century, it was the custom for doctors to frequently prescribe morphine (first isolated from opium by Friedrich Serturner in 1806) and other opium preparations. Morphine did not have a major impact on medical practice until the invention of the hypodermic needle in 1840. Soldiers illness was recognized after the Civil War when more than 50,000 veterans became dependent on morphine as a result of treatment for combat injuries (Musto 1987). The public also had ready access to opium and purified drugs in grocery stores and pharmacies. Medicinal mixtures and nostrums, usually unlabelled as to contents, often contained opium or morphine. By the end of the century, many physicians had come to recognize that chronic use of morphine was a disorder (morphinism), although others in society...

Assist in Standardization of Nomenclature. The profusion of trade names, initials, numbers, and combinations thereof for pesticides contributes to misuse and errors in the handling of these preparations. The coining of common or generic names for pesticides is a recent and commendable innovation in this field of science. It presents many problems which require the services of many groups. The many years of experience of the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry in the development of generic names for drugs is at the disposal of the committee in its consideration of nomenclature problems. 

Prepare elder flower tea. Strain well. Wait until the tea has cooled down to a comfortable temperature. Use an eye cup from the pharmacy and rinse the eyes with the cooled tea several times. Elder flower eyewash soothes sore or strained eyes. 

Pharmacists are also responsible for compounding special ear preparations for pets that are not commercially available. Sometimes the availability and cost of certain medications are prohibitive for a veterinarian s private pharmacy.
