Pregnancy ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) 500 mg orally once Contraindicated in pregnancy first-line agent in lactation, except for residents of California or Hawaii. 

As with other quinolones, ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in epileptic patients (since it may precipitate seizures), in children, during pregnancy and breast-feeding (due to risk of arthropathy in weight-bearing joints). 

Pregnancy Category B (tobramycin) Category C (gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin). 

In general, the fluoroquinolones are not recommended for use during pregnancy. However, the fluoroquinolones available currently are not teratogenic in laboratory animals. Moreover, women treated with ciprofloxacin and pregnant mares treated with enrofloxacin did not have an increase in abortions or birth defects. 

Fluoroquinolones Ciprofloxacin Norfloxacin Levofloxacin The newer quinolones have a greater spectrum of activity, including P. aeruginosa. These agents are effective for pyelonephritis and prostatitis. Avoid in pregnancy and children. Moxifloxacin should not be used owing to inadequate urinary concentrations. 

Ciprofloxacin is contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women and for persons aged <18 years. Some experts recommended washing podophyllin off after 1-4 hours to minimize local irritation. Safety during pregnancy is not established. 

Ciprofloxacin is not likely to cause major problems for a fetus, but there is not enough experience and data involving ciprofloxacin during pregnancy to say for certain that there is no risk to the fetus. 

I was started on ciprofloxacin to prevent anthrax. Tve heard that amoxicillin may be a safer drug for me to take during my pregnancy. How do 1 know if I can be switched to amoxicillin ... 

Doctors are often more confident about using amoxicillin than ciprofloxacin in pregnancy because they have more information on the safety of amoxicillin for die mother and the fetus. But in some situations, amoxicillin may not be effective against anthrax this is because the bacteria diat cause anthrax can sometimes develop reskstance to penicillins such as amoxicillin. Before prescribing amoxicillin for you, your doctor will want to learn more about the specific place and situation of your exposure to anthrax and also about your general medical history. (For instance,. some women cannot take amoxicillin because they are allergic to it.)... 

I m having a lot of heartburn during my pregnancy. Can 1 take ciprofloxacin at the same time as I take antacids ...
