The basic research in our fields is now done largely in universities. It can have incredibly important practical results, but those results cannot normally be predicted in advance. Who would have thought that the basic study of induced energy emission from excited states of atoms and molecules that led to the laser would wind up giving us a better way to record music, or read supermarket prices Would a music company have funded that research Who would have thought that our increased understanding of the chemistry of life would have led to the creation of biotechnology as an entirely new industry The industry that benefited from the basic research could not have funded it, since it did not yet exist. [Pg.187]

Each of the physical phenomena - , including spin-lattice relaxation and NOE experiments and the resulting NMR parameters, is discussed. Recalibration must be carried out to agreed upon standard procedures using calibration test equipment that is traceable back to national standards. All calibration tests must be fully documented, the results recorded, and the sheets signed off by an authorized person. Another way to look at the accuracy and precision of a measurement is in terms of the distribution of the data obtained (Fig. 1.1). To improve the error of a measurement, the process is repeated many times, if practical. The results recorded, after repeated identical tries, are not identical. Instead, the data follow a distribution, almost Gaussian in most cases (see Chap. 2 for more details), and the measured value reported is an average based on the shape of the distribution of data. Of course, in practical applications, the sampling process does not consist of drawing balls from a jar. There are a variety of more elegant procedures, generally based on successive iterations of a predetermined formula. An alternative approach that is useful when the number of samples to be drawn is relatively small is to reference a table of random numbers. Such tables have been developed and the results recorded in tabular format. (A table of three-digit random numbers appears in T le 10.) Nonisothermal Melt Crystallization. In routine DSC crystallization measurements of polymers, nonisothermal crystallization is typically used.This method is simple and gives practical results. At the same time, the information obtained is limited to the characteristic temperatures of crystallization. The sample is heated beyond the equilibrium melting point of the polymer, held there for several minutes for temperature equilibration, and also to destroy all nuclei, and then it is cooled at a specific constant rate to room temperature or below to record the crystallization exotherm. [Pg.91]

The material first used by Wieland et al. was gourd curare from the middle Orinoco district, near Urbana, in Bolivar State, Venezuela, but in the fomth paper (1941) results are recorded for curares from Colombia and Venezuela, for which more precise details of origin are not available and there is considerable difference in the nature and quantity of the alkaloids in the various samples used. An examination has also been made of the bark of Strychnos toxifera, and one of the alkaloids (toxiferine II) it contains has been found in some of the curares examined. In all, ten alkaloids have been obtained and characterised and, with the exception of curine, they are all of quaternary type. They are named toxiferine, dihydrotoxiferine, or calabash-curarine (shortened to C-curarine in practice) according to type, and the variants within the type are distinguished by numbers, or numbers and letters, e.g., toxiferine I, toxiferine Ilb. [Pg.380]

Many modern instruments used in the analytical laboratory are interfaced with a computer and a printer provides a permanent record of the experimental data and the final result may even be given. This printout should be permanently attached to the observations page of the laboratory record book, and it should be regarded as normal practice to perform a rough calculation to confirm that the printed result is of the right order. [Pg.72]
