Power optimization

For optimization tools linked to procedural models, note that reliable and efficient automatic differentiation tools are available that link to models written, say, in FORTRAN and C, and calculate exact first (and often second) derivatives. Examples of these include ADIFOR, ADOL-C, GRESS, Odyssee, and PADRE. When used with care, these can be applied to existing procedural models and, when linked to modern NLP and MINLP algorithms, can lead to powerful optimization capabilities. More information on these and other automatic differentiation tools can be found at http //www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/ autodiff/ADTools/. [Pg.70]

The mixing of solvents in various ratios tinned out to be a powerful optimization tool in nonaqueous CE, since a favorable ratio of mixture dielectric constant to its viscosity enhances separation efficiency and analysis speed. [Pg.38]

This power optimization allocated turbine-driven sets to the drilling personnel which were accepted reluctantly because of unknown technology. A drilling contractor familiar with turbine equipment overcame this reluctance so further design work could proceed. [Pg.26]

A similar analysis may be made for the 1D case.126 The interaction energies / (co) then show an enhancement of the order of k/a 103 relative to the parameters of the isolated point dipole, which is easily overwhelmed by nonradiative processes. Using the simple golden rule image, we may say that the transition dipole shows a huge increase from 0D to 3D systems, while the effective photon continuum density varies in an opposite (in fact complementary) way as follows, with radiative-power optimization for 2D systems ... [Pg.140]

In mathematical optimization for many applications, it is commonly expected that the response surface will have a bell shape for which the point located at the top of the surface can be picked as the optimum point without any debate. However, in the case study of this paper, such a response surface was not obtained. Other engineering criteria were applied as a compromise between pros and cons, according to implications revealed by the response surfaces. Cross-checking the optimization result based on instrumental measured quantities with that from panel studies is important for validation. Although it is a powerful optimization tool with versatile applications, without professional knowledge and experience, the contribution of RSM is limited. [Pg.181]

As noted earlier in chapter 1 of this book, simulated annealing is a powerful optimization technique that attempts to find a global minimum of a function using concepts borrowed from Statistical Mechanics. Although it was first described in its entirety by Kirkpatrick et al.(1983), significant portions of the method were described as early as 1953 by Metropolis et al. (1953). [Pg.141]

A validation technique where, together with the training and evaluation sets, an additional external set is created to perform a further check on the predictive capabilities of a model obtained from a training set and with predictive power optimized by an evaluation set. When the number of obj ects is large enough, the use of an external data set for a further model validation is strongly suggested. [Pg.837]
