Self-love

Imagination. .. which is ever wandering beyond the bounds of truth, joined to self-love and that self-confidence we are so apt to indulge, prompt us to draw conclusions which are not immediately derived from facts so that we become in some measure interested in deceiving ourselves. We must trust to nothing but facts These are presented to us by Nature, and cannot deceive. 

They say that all private property is acquired and improved for the reason that each one of us by himself has his own home and wife and children. From this, self-love springs. For when we raise a son to riches and dignities, and leave an heir to much wealth, we become either ready to grasp at the property of the State, if in any case fear should be removed from the power which belongs to riches and rank or avaricious, crafty, and hypocritical, if anyone is of slender purse, little strength, and mean ancestry. But when we have taken away self-love, there remains only love for the State. 

Demanding, self-pity, self-love, possessive, hurt, and tearful... 

The Americans. .. enjoy explaining almost every act of their lives on the principle of self-interest properly understood. It gives them pleasure to point out how an enlightened self-love continually leads them to help one another and disposes them freely to give part of their time and wealth for the good of the state. I think that in this way they often do themselves less than justice, for sometimes in the United States, as elsewhere, one sees people carried away by the disinterested, spontaneous impulses natural to man. But the Americans are hardly prepared to admit that they give tvay to emotions of this sort. They prefer to give the credit to their philosophy rather than to themselves. (DA, p. 526 my italics). 

From all the affirmative parental attention they receive, only children tend to become full of themselves. Flourishing under the exclusive focus of parental love, only children tend to develop a strong sense of self-love and self-esteem. Being so full of themselves can create an "only" attitude that can be empowering in a number of ways. 

In his classic novel Crime and Punishment, Rodion Raskolnikov wrote, The first manifestations of newly-freed man are exaggerated individualism, self-isolation, and rebellion against the exterior harmony of the world he develops an unhealthy self-love which moves him to explore the lower reaches of his being (Foedor Dostoevsky). He believed that freedom opens the path of evil. In all of Dostoevsky s novels, man...

More on the cultivation of the moral sense critique of "self-interest, or rather self-love, or egoism which is no part of morality"... 

In exploring this relationship, Musil has his fictional persona, the man without qualities , ask the question that has constantly pursued him Who/what am I Sometimes Ulrich can identify in himself that male self that strives to dominate, that seeks worldly success. But he also perceives his female side. If the lonely and tormented hero of Book i is to achieve inner equilibrium he needs the gende companionship, the corrective of a sister who, as his Selbsdiebe ( self-love ), his philautia , helps to reconcile him with himself. 

Nimis perverse se ipsum amat. .[ A man has an excessively unhealthy self-love if he is willing to lead others into error in order to conceal his own. For it is far better and more beneficial, when he has himself made a mistake, that others do not make the same mistake, since upon their advice he might be disabused.
