In the absence of sufficient hydrogen, the solubility of magnetite is markedly temperature dependent, which provides an explanation for some of the problems in high-temperature circuits. Most studies in boilers relate to high temperatures. Thus the work of Bloom " and of Potter and Mann has reproduced the types of corrosion found in high-pressure boilers. The relationship between corrosion rates and iron solubility and pH are given in Fig. 17.2. Note that the pH range about the neutral point (relative to 300 C... [Pg.840]

The author is grateful to Drs. P. Potter (AERE), D. W. Green (AML), J. K. Fink (ANL), and L. Leibowitz (ANL) for helpful discussions concerning the Pu-0 system. The author is particularly grateful to Dr. J. E. Battles (ANL) for providing this writer with his unpublished manuscript and permission to quote the results of a mass spectrometric study of the volatilization of plutonia. [Pg.125]

Studies have demonstrated that treatment with soy or phytoestrogen enriched diets is effective in conserving bone in rodent models of osteoporosis (Anderson and Gamer, 1998 Ishimi et al, 2000 Draper et al, 1997). The mechanism of action of phytoestrogens on bone health is unclear but several mechanisms including inhibition of bone resorption and stimulation of bone formation maybe involved (Fanti etal, 1998 Ishimi e/a/., 1999 Picherit eta/., 2000). Limited data from studies in postmenopausal women have indicated that phytoestrogen supplements have a small, beneficial effect on bone loss in the lumbar spine (Alekel et al, 2000 Potter et al, 1998 Somekawa et al, 2001). [Pg.71]

In summary, while no strong conclusions can be drawn based on these mortality studies, it is important to note that four of these studies (Fanning 1988 Malcolm and Barnett 1982 McDonald and Potter 1996 Michaels et al. 1991) reported some elevation in deaths due to cerebrovascular disease. No other studies reported increased mortality due to cerebrovascular disease caused by lead exposure. [Pg.49]

Potter and co-workers 301) determined reducing sugars in plant materials by reducing copper(II) in alkaline solution to insoluble cuprous oxide and then measuring the excess copper in the filtrate. Mitschell248) conducted further studies on this method. Christian and Feldman 19) have described general procedures for the indirect determination of glucose and of protein. It is anticipated that in the future, we will see many more applications of atomic absorption spectroscopy to the indirect determination of nonmetals. [Pg.107]

Calls for the study of farmers behavior and what motivates that behavior are not new (Gasson 1973). However, the number of studies that have considered farmers attitudes toward conservation (MacDonald 1984) is small. Fewer still have studied farmers conservation actions. Potter (1986) points out that a very limited number have tried to link farmers actions to their underlying motivations, notwithstanding the discourses on the conservation issues in the countryside (Beedell and Rehman 2000). Almost all studies related to the motivational elements of behavior have stressed that the decision to act in a certain way is affected by a balancing or weighing of a number of influences. Lemon and Park (1993) concluded that farmers, when... [Pg.26]

The reaction, CO + Cl2 = > C0CI2, in the presence of activated carbon catalyst was studied at several temperatures with the results shown Potter Baron, CEP 47, 473, 1951). The controlling mechanism is believed to be reaction between adsorbed CO and Cl2, but the amount of adsorbed CO is relatively small. Find the Arrhenius constants of all the terms. [Pg.688]

Frankland left Owens College in 1857 to teach at St. Bartholomew s Hospital in London, and in 1865, he succeeded Hofmann at the Royal School of Mines, when Hofmann left London to return to Germany. Frankland s successor at Owens was Henry Roscoe, who had just returned from studying with Bunsen at Heidelberg and who was the son of a distinguished Lancashire family (and the uncle of Beatrix Potter). [Pg.183]

Two recent events allow a more detailed picture of the solubility of hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and the noble gases in water to be given, than could have been given even a year ago. First, a careful compilation and evaluation of the gas solubility values in water at a gas partial pressure of one atm between the temperatures of 273.15 and about 350 K was carried out by Battino [1 —5]. Second, an experimental study of the solubility of the noble gases in water at moderate pressures and at temperatures up to 561 K by a new method was reported by Potter and Clynne [6J. [Pg.513]

The effects of gas hold-up and bubble diameter have also been studied by Sridhar and Potter and, again, the correlations obtained by Calderbank are recommended. [Pg.711]

Four short-term (six months) human studies have been performed on the effects of different isoflavone preparations on bone mineral density (Alekel et ah, 2000 Potter et al., 1998, Clifton-Bligh et al., 2001 Hsu et al., 2001) and one on bone markers (Wagen et al., 2000). [Pg.98]
