Mechanical displacements associated with potato are in the micron range. Quantitation of potato effects is difficult, and no perfect solution to potato problems exists. Every ESR spectroscopist is aware of the problem, and partial solutions can often be found based on the conceptual models outlined in this section. 

Many studies have reported a link between consumption of sunburned potatoes, ie, those exposed to the sun and having an accumulation of chlorophyll and solanine under the skin, with incidences of teratogenic effects and even death (59—61). Because sunburned potatoes in the commercial marketplace are relatively rare, and because the long-term effects of consumption of potatoes at the maximum estabUshed limits of solanine concentration are uncertain, there is equal uncertainty of the tme incidence of human toxicity (62). 

The compound is not effective when appHed as a preharvest dormancy agent on potatoes and it should not be used until injuries to the tuber coat have healed. Neither should it be appHed until some suberization has occurred, generally two weeks after storage at >10° C (23). CIPC is widely used outside the United States on a number of crops as a herbicide. 

Up to Harvest. Oilseed rape and field beans are used as break crops for winter wheat on a variety of soils, and potatoes are used on the lighter soils. Sugar beet may also be grown, but this depends not only on the soil but also on the proximity of a sugar beet processing factor. Four Rothamsted-based experiments compared the effectiveness of winter wheat and winter oilseed rape in their use of labelled nitrogen fertilizer. This reaction evolves heat to the surroundings, which might be the air around a Bunsen burner in the laboratory or a potato being baked in a gas oven. In either case, the effect of the heat transfer is to raise the temperature of the surroundings.
