Potassium nitrate oxidising agents

Strong oxidising agents such as acidified potassium manganate(VII) oxidise NOj to the nitrate ion ... [Pg.233]

Fused potassium nitrate is a powerful oxidising agent (cf. the oxidation of manganese compounds, p.. IS6 ... [Pg.383]

The behaviour of iridium is closely analogous to that of rhodium its corrosion diagram is very similar and it is, with rhodium, one of the least corrodible of metals. It is unattacked by alkalis, acids or oxidising agents in aqueous solution, although a fused mixture of caustic potash and potassium nitrate will attack it. The metal has an excellent resistance to fused lead oxide, silicates, molten copper and iron at temperatures up to 1 500°C. Additions of iridium to platinum considerably raise the corrosion resistance of the latter to a very wide range of reagents. [Pg.931]

Yellow phosphorus ignites in molten ammonium nitrate, and mixtures of phosphorus with ammonium nitrate, mercuiy(I) nitrate or silver nitrate explode on impact. Red phosphorus is oxidised vigorously when heated with potassium nitrate [1]. During development of new refining agents for aluminium manufacture, a mixture containing red phosphorus (16%) and sodium nitrate (35%) was being pressed into 400 g tablets. When the die pressure was increased to 70 bar, a violent explosion occurred [2],... [Pg.1887]

Mercuric thiocyanate, which is formed as a white precipitate when mercuric nitrate and potassium thiocyanate solutions are mixed, is soluble in excess of either solution. When dried, this salt is inflammable, forming a voluminous ash known as Pharaoh s serpents. By the interaction of a mercuric salt with ammonium thiocyanate and thio-carbamide in acetic acid solution in the presence of an oxidising agent, or by the action of hydrogen sulphide on mercuric thiocyanate, the phototropic compound HS.Hg.CNS is obtained.6... [Pg.282]

All oxidising agents decompose it readily H,0 and arsenic trioxide being formed by tibie less active oxidants, and and arsenic add by the more active. lid potassium hydrate decomposes the gas partially and becomes coated with a dark deposit which seems to be elementary arsenic. Solutions of the alkaline hydrates absorb and decompose it H ia given off and an alkaline orsenite remains in the solution. Many metals, when heated in AsH decompose it with formation of a metallic areenide and liberation of hydrogen. Solution of silver nitrate is reduced it elementary silver is depodted, and the solution contains arsenic trionao. [Pg.120]
