Thio carbamide

The available agents with antithyroid activity are the thioamides propylthiouracil, carbimazole and methimazole also known as thiamazole. Their thio-carbamide group is indispensable for antithyroid activity. The mechanism of action is complex. The most important action is the prevention of hormone synthesis by an inhibition of the thyroid peroxidase-catalyzed reactions involved in iodine organification. These agents also block the coupling of the iodoty-rosines. 

III.b.1.2. Inhibitors of hormonogenesis thioamides. The active antithyroid compound is thio-carbamide. Methimazole, carbimazole (which is converted to methimazole in vivo) and PTU (propylthiouracil) are mostly used to treat hyperthyroidism. 

Mercuric thiocyanate, which is formed as a white precipitate when mercuric nitrate and potassium thiocyanate solutions are mixed, is soluble in excess of either solution. When dried, this salt is inflammable, forming a voluminous ash known as Pharaoh s serpents. By the interaction of a mercuric salt with ammonium thiocyanate and thio-carbamide in acetic acid solution in the presence of an oxidising agent, or by the action of hydrogen sulphide on mercuric thiocyanate, the phototropic compound HS.Hg.CNS is obtained.6...
