Potassium mixture

A trichloroethylene/potassium mixture detonates around 100 C apart from when the superoxide KO2 layer that covers potassium is removed beforehand. The danger is therefore assumed to come from the oxidising property of this oxide. However, it seems surprising that pure potassium is inactive vis-a-vis this halogen derivative at such a temperature. [Pg.280]

More recent data by Skupinshi, Tortel, and Vautrey [26] with sodium-potassium mixtures indicate that the following relation may be preferable to that of Eq. (6-45) for constant-heat-flux conditions ... [Pg.307]

A horizontal cylindrical heater with d = 2 cm is placed in a pool of sodium-potassium mixture with 22 percent sodium. The mixture is at 120°C, and the heater surface is constant at 200°C. Calculate the heat transfer for a heater 40 cm long. [Pg.363]

The sodium flame masks that of other elements, e.g, that of potassium. Mixtures can be readily detected with the direct vision spectroscope (see Fig. II.4). A less delicate method is to view the flame through two thicknesses of cobalt blue glass, whereby the yellow colour due to sodium is masked or absorbed, and the other colours are modified as listed in Table V.3. [Pg.397]

Lithium and Na are believed to be miscible under the operating conditions, and tritium production with a 50-50 Li-Na atomic mixture is calculated to be greater than 1.0. Lithium-potassium mixtures are also of interest for the Cauldron concept. [Pg.512]

EXPLOSION and FIRE CONCERNS not combustible fumes are highly toxic incompatible with potassium mixtures of powdered zinc and powdered chloride are flammable heating the solid to decomposition emits toxic fumes of chloride and zinc oxide use agent suitable for firefighting purposes. [Pg.991]

The surface tension of a liquid alkali metal mixture also shows pronounced deviation from the mean value. The surface tension of liquid cesium (74 N m x 10 ), lies much below that for sodium (197 Nm x 10 ), and since surface tension reflects the attraction between atoms in the liquid, the concentration of cesium in the surface of the liquid metal mixture should be much greater than in the bulk of the liquid. Consistent with this, the surface tension of pure sodium falls rapidly upon addition of cesium, and in the range 40-100% cesium the surface tension is near to that for pure cesium. A similar behavior has been observed for sodium-potassium mixtures. Many chemical reactions of the liquid alkali metals and their mixtures involve reaction with gases, and care must then be exercised in relating reaction rates with bulk composition when it is the surface composition that is the relevant factor. [Pg.187]
