Post-additives

In experiments with water-soluble inhibitors, the subsample was stirred under nitrogen during post-addition of an aqueous solution of the inhibitor followed by an aqueous sodium nitrite solution. Aliquots were weighed into 1-oz ointment jars, covered with nitrogen, sealed, and stored at 37 for later replicate analyses. Preparation of the positive control subsample was identical except that water was added in place of inhibitor. 

Since post-addition of oil-soluble inhibitors would not assure their presence in the oil phase of the emulsion, separate emulsions were prepared. 

Swell Index and Percent Solubles Measurements. Polymer films were cast on polyester film at 25X solids with various post additives. The films were air dried (16-48 h) then cured for 3 and 10 min at 150 C In a converted oven. Small samples (50-100 mg) of film were weighed, soaked In dimethylformamide (DHF) for 1 h, briefly pat-dried and reweighed In an A1 weighing pan. The samples were then redried at 150 C (20 torr) or 170 C, 1 atm for 30 min. 

Dimethylbutanol (117mmol), [3] (0.4mmol), [NaOCl] (126mmol) added at 1.4mmoEmin, T=0°C, Bleach addition time 90 min, post addition time 120 min. Determined by GO.

Sl. In this case the temperature profile is misleading as it could be interpreted as completely uncritical. In truth this harmless temperature profile is caused by the fact that the reaction hardly proceeds at all and that a dramatic runaway will follow in the batch reactor-like post addition phase. 

In some cases, polymer crosslinking may be effected by a post-addition of peroxide to the shaped polymer. The process is performed by sorption of peroxide from the surface of the extruded tube following its deposition [101]. Conditions of crosslinking are adjusted so that diffusion into the bulk of polymer precedes the decomposition of peroxide. The rate of diffusion depends on the kind of peroxide, used and for the same peroxide also on the type of polyethylene and its thermal history [102].
