Electrode isolation is practiced to minimize chlorine production and to reduce fouhng. A flush solution free of chlorides or with reduced pH is used to bathe the electrodes in some plants. DAVID J. NEWBURGER (Law) is Assistant Professor of Law at Washington University in St. Louis and is an attorney in private practice. He has worked for the State of Ohio, the Department of Commerce, and the firm of Arnold and Porter. 

In 1963, the first volume of Advances in Photochemistry appeared. It was founded by W. Albert Noyes, Jr., along with George Hairanond and James N. Pitts, Jr. Therefore, it is fitting that we dedicate the rebirth of this series, which was discontinued temporarily after Volume 12 appeared in 1980, to his memory. Many of the review articles that have appeared in earlier issues of Advances in Photochemistry were written by his former graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. These include R. Srinivasan, Derrick Hoare, Hideo Okabe, Jacques LeMaire, Israel Unger, Julian Heicklen, David Phillips, and Gerald Porter.

David Porter and Warren Knox critically read the numerous internal reports issued at earlier stages of this work, and a draft of the first edition of this book, and made helpful suggestions.

A bibliography of all rhe books written on DTA/DSC and other TA techniques since 1937 has been compiled by Lombardi (9).

The last 2010 GC meeting was in Ferrara (XXIII lUPAC Symposium) (Fig. 34). It was an occasion to hear the talks of Anne Kotiaho, the winner of the second Prize for the PhD thesis, W. Nau, winner of the EPA-PPS award, and D. Phillips, recipient of the 2010 Porter Medal. The new EC was also elected. Eric Vauthey was elected the new Chairman, Dimitra Markovitsi remained on the Committee as Past-President and S. Canonica as Treasurer (Fig. 35). The other members were John Gilchrist (UK, Industry-Liaison), Olga Fedorova (Russia, Public Relations), Werner Nau (Germany, Responsible for PPS matters). Bo Albinsson (Sweden, Newsletter Editor), Julia Perez-Prieto (Spain, Associate Editor) and David Worrall (UK, Website manager). 

Spectroscopic characterization of SAMs derived from alkanethiols adsorbed on silver using PIERS (75,75) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) (14,22) has been carried out in several laboratories these results are in excellent agreement. In this section we focus on the results that we have obtained in collaboration with Ralph Nuzzo (AT T Bell Labs) and David Allara (Penn State) using PIERS (75). Porter and co-workers have also done an excellent study on this system using PIERS (75).
