The aim of this paper is to offer experimental results for the molecular weight dependence of adsorption of polystyrene-sulfonate) onto a platinum plate from aqueous NaCl solution at 25 °C. Measurements of poly(styrenesulfonate) adsorption were carried out by ellipsometry. The dependences of molecular weight and added salt concentration on the thickness of the adsorbed layer and also the adsorbances of polymer and salt are examined. 

The total number of cross-links per gram is directly proportional to radiation dose. Either RSMW or JRg(Mw)2/3 should be independent of initial molecular weight, depending on whether all repeating units or only those near the surface of the coils have equal probabilities for intermolecular cross-link formation. Complete coil collapse is clearly ruled out by the results. Moreover, detailed calculations (46) show that a trend in the product RgMw due to systematic differences in intramolecular cross-linking, should be observed even for only partially collapsed random coils. As shown in part A of Table IV, fg increases slightly with PTMG MW, while decreases. A similar trend was observed with low molecular weight polymers of poly(vinyl acetate) and polystyrene (6). It is reasoned that the molecular weight dependence of fg arises because longer soft segment length requires more volume to accommodate the increased number of conformations available to such a chain.

A notable feature of the model is the postulation of an expression relating aggregation of polymer chains to concentration and the solvent power of the diluent. The excellent agreement between prediction and observation for solutions of short oil alkyd resins is taken as evidence for the importance of aggregation effects on viscosity in these systems. In addition, the accurate description of the molecular weight dependence of the viscosities of concentrated polystyrene solutions is an indication of the general applicability of the model. 

At high temperatures, [Ru(CH3)(Tp)(CO)(NCMe)] acts as catalyst for the production of polystyrene. The dependence of polystyrene molecular weight on benzene/cumene molar ratios suggests a radical polymerization mechanism. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate, in the presence of [Ru(CH3)(Tp)(CO)(NCMe)j with carbon tetrachloride or methyl dichloroacetate, has been observed at 90°C.31... 

Establishment of Criticality. By using the methodology just outlined, the criticality inherent in eq 1, as predicted by theory, could be verified, as far as we know, for the first time. In view of the molecular weight dependence of t (discussed later) this verification required ideally mono-disperse material, which amongst readily available polymers is best approximated by anionically polymerized polystyrene, a material used in much that is to follow.
