The entire installation is finished with a carpet of synthetic grass, which comprises usually a woven polypropylene lattice in which tufts of green polypropylene fibre or filament are fixed. The lattice is sealed on the under-side with a bonded film—which keeps the tufts in place and may be made from polyethylene, polyurethane, rubber latex, or vinyl plastisol. [Pg.110]

Sporting equipment would be much more primitive. Skis would be wooden and ski boots, leather. Ski clothing, too, would be heavy and bulky, because it would be made of wool—no polypropylene to wick perspiration away from the body, no fleece, or breathable, waterproof expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) such as GoreTex. In sports such as athletics, traditional materials have been almost completely replaced by synthetic materials. Sports surfaces in modern indoor stadiums are usually made from a porous structure of rubber crumb and a binder such as polyurethane. Fabrics used in the automotive industry must meet exceptionally high requirements and be subjected to nonstandard tests that simulate the high-temperature and humidity conditions of light exposure [7]. Dyed fibers cannot meet these accelerated exposure specifications, which are met by specially stabilized, pigmented polypropylene fibers. The outdoor use of polypropylene fibers is expected to grow because of improved stabilizers. It has permitted grass-substitute products to be manufactured in a variety of forms. Polypropylene is intrinsically less resistant to ultraviolet radiation. Although polypropylene shows powdering rather than grass surface grazing after sunlight exposure, minute surface cracks are visible under the microscope. Under certain conditions the microcracks can act as points of stress concentration. This can reduce the impact strength of the component. [Pg.218]
