Polypropylene applications staple fibers

Meh Spinning. This process is used to produce a broad range of polypropylene fibers ranging from fine, dtex (one denier) staple coarse continuous filaments. Hoiuopolyiners are almost exclusive used to produce fibers, although copolymer blends are used in some special applications. Processing conditions and polymer melt flow vary with the desired fiber type. 

Polypropylenes are available as molding powder, extruded sheet, cast film, textile staple, and continuous-filament yarn. They find use in packaging film molded parts for automobiles, appliances, and housewares wire and cable coating food container closures bottles, printing plates carpet and upholstery fibers storage battery cases crates for soft-drink bottles laboratory ware trays fish nets surgical casts and a variety of other applications. 

Oil absorption data on several fibrous materials are presented in Table 10.10. The data for raw cotton (RC), melt blown (MBPP) and staple (SPP) polypropylene are included for comparison purposes. These fibers represent some of the fiber types used in commercial oil spill clean-up applications. The data show that compared to RC, MBPP and SPP, the shredded textile waste fibers absorb oil at a much faster rate than traditional oil-spill clean-up fibers. Olefin fiber is an important material for nonwovens (74). The geotextile market is still small, despite expectations that polypropylene is to be the principal fiber in such applications. Disposable nonwoven applications include hygienic cover-stock, sanitary wipes, and medical roll goods. The two competing processes for the coverstock market are thermal-bonded carded staple and spimbond, both of which have displaced latex-bonded polyester because of improved strength, softness, and inertness.
