Polyolefins, BASF

A number of other companies are also marketing or developing com-patibilizing additives. For example, Dexco Polymers, of Houston, Tex., sells a line of styrenic block copolymers which can enhance properties of mixed streams of polyolefins. BASF is developing compatibilizers for mixtures of polystyrene with polyethylene or polypropylene and for mixtures of ABS with polypropylene. DuPont sells compatibilizers based on maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefins for compatibilization of mixed polyolefins. ... [Pg.1049]

BASF had the broadest, most complete line of polymers in the world 10 years ago but since then, has been selectively reducing its presence in products that have become true commodities, such as polyolefins and styrenic polymers (described in more detail later). It has been a key element of its business philosophy to be, as much as possible, a fully integrated polymer manufacturer, all way back to basic chemical and petrochemical feedstocks. Certainly, there are others, notably such oil companies as Exxon and SABIC, that also have fully integrated product lines, but these are largely limited to polyolefins. BASF has a German term for this integration, "Verbund," and says on its website (viewed 11/01/12), as follows ... [Pg.135]

Poly(isobutylene) (PIB) is the earliest polyolefin that has been produced on a technical scale. A German patent was filed in 1931 (1), which was eventually published in 1937. Other patents followed (2). In 1938 PIB was marketed as Oppanol B by BASF. Oppau is a district of Ludwigshafen (3). [Pg.151]

CEOs of a number of long-standing players appear to have decided the answers are negative, on the evidence of some major divestments of commodity chemical properties in recent years. These include BASF s and Shell s decision to divest polyolefins maker Basell, BP s spinning off its Innovene petrochemicals unit, DSM s sale of its petrochemicals to Sabic, and DuPont s divestment of its Invista fibers business, which includes leading petrochemical stakes, specifically in nylon and polyester intermediates. [Pg.64]

These homopolymers have structure units as shown in Fig. 2.1, where the asterisk indicates asymmetric carbon atoms. Thus, polypropylene (PP), poly (butene-1) (PB1), and poly(4-methylpentene-l) (P4MP1) have different tactic forms. The most important commercial polyolefins are polyethylene, polyisobutene, and the isotactic forms, that is, iPP, iPBl, and iP4MPl. Polyisobutene was first polymerized by the IG Farbenindustries (BASF) in the late 1920s. Polyethylene was first polymerized by ICI in the late 1930s in a branched form (1). There are several processes for the production of moldable polyolefin beads. In the BASF process, LDPF foam strands are extruded out of a multi-hole die and granulated to beads by a die-face cutter. Inexpensive butane is used as the blowing agent and the foam beads are then cross-hnked by electron-beam. As the beads have atmospheric cell pressure, a special technique is required to develop the... [Pg.228]

Basell was established in 2000 as a 50 50 joint venture of BASF and Shell designed to consolidate their global polyolefins businesses including their Elenac, Montell and Targor subsidiaries. Basell reported total sales of 6.7 billion in 2004 when it had 6,600 employees with operations in 21 countries. Sales activities extended to 120 countries. In 2005, Access Industries, the American industrial holding company, announced that it had bought Basell from its BASF and Shell parents for a total cost of 4.4 billion. [Pg.85]
