Humans differ in sensitivity due to biological factors such as metabolic polymorphism, age, gender, health status, and nutritional status. These differences can be the result of genetic and/or environ-mental/behavioral influences. This intraspecies (interindividual) variation is greater in humans than in the more inbred experimental animal population. 

The marked interindividual variation in coumarin metabolism to 7-hydroxy-coumarin has led to studies to evaluate whether a genetic polymorphism exists in human CYP2A6. 

Interindividual variation in NQOl expression is present in human populations, but the range of variation is relatively modest (Table 2). Humans also display marked interindividual variability in the capacity to repair damaged DNA. This variation is partly due to genetic factors, and genetic polymorphisms have been found in several proteins involved in DNA repair (Kalberlah and Schneider 1998, KEMI 2003).
