Based on the principle of the equal and simultaneous solvation of the polymer and the bound peptide chains in different solvents, Sheppard and coworkers developed a number of polyacrylamide-type supports for solid phase peptide synthesis 50 55). In this case, the crosslinked polymeric support, in addition to possessing the good mechanical characteristics like polystyrene, is much more structurally related to the peptide than in the case of polystyrene. The polar polyacrylamide support in this case is prepared by the emulsion copolymerization of a mixture of dimethylacrylamide (7), ethylenebisacrylamide (2) and acryloylsarcosine methylester (5), initiated by ammo-nium persulphatesl). [Pg.128]

To improve the limit-of-detection, we replaced the 16 mm vacuum deposited CuPc/Cgg bilayer devices with 1 mm solution-processed polymer devices based on 1 1 blends by weight of poly(3-hexylthiophene) [P3HT] and [6, 6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid-methylester [PCBM] - a soluble derivative of Ceo- The P3HT PCBM devices fabricated in our laboratory typically have very low short-circuit dark current densities of <10 mA cm , and are consequently a good choice for high sensitivity detection [21]. Monomer 3 essentially serves to functionalise the polyacrylamide polymer after liberation of the primary amino group of the P-alanine moiety. The hexamethylenediamine groups serve as spacers in order to spatially separate the reactive groups. Monomer 3 was later on replaced by acryloylsarcosin methylester 4 (Scheme 1.5.5. ), which is chemically closer to the basic monomer, in order to achieve a homogenous distribution of the functional groups. [Pg.39]

Other possible syntheses are based on a plas-tein reaction (cf. 1.4.6.3.2) with an N-derivatized aspartic acid and phenylalanine methylester or on bacterial synthesis of an Asp-Phe polymer, achieved by genetic engineering techniques, enzymatic cleavage of the polymer to Asp-Phe, followed by acid or enzyme catalyzed esterification of the dipeptide with methanol. [Pg.442]

Tomalia presented the synthesis of dendrimers as Starburst polymers, which consisted of poly(amide-amine)s as shown in Scheme 1 [2]. The core molecule in this case was ammonia, and the building block was methylacrylate. First, ammonia reacted with methylacrylate by a Michael-type addition. The obtained ester-terminated molecule was treated with a large excess amount of ethylene-diamine to form amino groups at the terminal positions (generation 0, GO). In this reaction, the methylester is the protected form of the amine, and the treatment with ethylenediamine (ester-amide transformation) corresponds to the deprotection of the ester function. Treatment of this amine-terminated molecule again with methylacrylate results in the formation of another terminal methyl-ester group. The molecule can be extended by repeating these operations. [Pg.270]
