Polymerization inhibited

Eatty acid soap was first used for ESBR. Its scarcity prompted the investigation of rosin acids from gum and wood as substitutes (1). The discovery of the disproportionation of rosin allowed rosin acid soaps to overcome the polymerization inhibition of untreated rosin acids. Rosin acid soaps gave the added benefit of tack to the finished polymer. In the 1990s, both fatty acid and rosin acid soaps, mainly derived from tall oil, are used in ESBR.

Styrene is capable of forming moderately stable Co-C bonds.370 The formation and decomposition of adducts between the CCT catalysts and the propagating radicals results in reversible inhibition .123-271 In this case, an induction period is observed at the beginning of polymerization. This induction period is characterized by the steady growth of the rate of polymerization similar to the classic kinetics of a polymerization inhibited by a weak inhibitor. Depending upon conditions, the time required to reach steady-state polymerization kinetics (eq 42) may require tens of minutes.

Methods of producing FRP laminates with polyesters have been described in Chapter 2. The major process today is the hand layup technique in which the resin is brushed or rolled into the glass mat (or cloth) by hand (see Figure 2.44). Since unsaturated polyesters are susceptible to polymerization inhibition by air, surfaces of the hand layup laminates may remain under-cured, soft, and, in some cases, tacky if freely exposed to air during the curing. A common way of avoiding this difiiculty is to blend a small amount of paraffin wax (or other incompatible material) in with the resin. This blooms out on the surface and forms a protective layer over the resin during cure.
