Polymer solutions are often characterized by their high viscosities compared to solutions of nonpolymeric solutes at similar mass concentrations. This is due to the mechanical entanglements formed between polymer chains. In fact, where entanglements dominate flow, the (zero-shear) viscosity of polymer melts and solutions varies with the 3.4 power of weight-average molecular weight. [Pg.435]

Another example of static SIMS used in a more quantitative role is in the analysis of extmded polymer blends. The morphology of blended polymers processed by extrusion or molding can be affected by the melt temperature, and pressure, etc. The surface morphology can have an effect on the properties of the molded polymer. Adhesion, mechanical properties, and physical appearance are just a few properties affected by processing conditions. [Pg.556]

Cooling rates can affect product properties in a number of ways. If the polymer melt is sheared into shape the molecules will be oriented. On release of shearing stresses the molecules will tend to re-coil or relax, a process which becomes slower as the temperature is reduced towards the Tg. If the mass solidifies before relaxation is complete (and this is commonly the case) frozen-in orientation will occur and the polymeric mass will be anisotropic with respect to mechanical properties. Sometimes such built-in orientation is deliberately introduced, such as... [Pg.174]

To understand the global mechanical and statistical properties of polymeric systems as well as studying the conformational relaxation of melts and amorphous systems, it is important to go beyond the atomistic level. One of the central questions of the physics of polymer melts and networks throughout the last 20 years or so dealt with the role of chain topology for melt dynamics and the elastic modulus of polymer networks. The fact that the different polymer strands cannot cut through each other in the... [Pg.493]

Though the accuracy of description of flow curves of real polymer melts, attained by means of Eq. (10), is not always sufficient, but doubtless the equation of such a structure based on the idea of relaxation mechanism of non-Newtonian polymer flow, correctly reflects the main peculiarities of viscous properties. Therefore while discussing the effect a filler has on the viscosity properties of polymer melts, besides the dependences Y(filler modifies the characteristic time of relaxation. According to [19], a possible form of the X versus

The fact that the appearance of a wall slip at sufficiently high shear rates is a property inwardly inherent in filled polymers or an external manifestation of these properties may be discussed, but obviously, the role of this effect during the flow of compositions with a disperse filler is great. The wall slip, beginning in the region of high shear rates, was marked many times as the effect that must be taken into account in the analysis of rheological properties of filled polymer melts [24, 25], and the appearance of a slip is initiated in the entry (transitional) zone of the channel [26]. It is quite possible that in reality not a true wall slip takes place, but the formation of a low-viscosity wall layer depleted of a filler. This is most characteristic for the systems with low-viscosity binders. From the point of view of hydrodynamics, an exact mechanism of motion of a material near the wall is immaterial, since in any case it appears as a wall slip. [Pg.87]

The crystallization of polymer melts at high pressure (several thousand of atmospheres), just as the crystallization in flowing melts and stirred solutions, leads to the formation of ECC in which the molecules assume almost completely extended conformations. This suprising feet (the crystallization was carried out at hydrostatic compression) was first extablished experimentally by Wunderlich30 and then confirmed by other authors31 33. However, diverse opinions exist about the mechanism of ECC formation. [Pg.216]

One of the common problems associated with underwater pelletizers is the tendency of the die holes to freeze off. This results in nonuniform polymer melt flow, increased pressure drop, and irregular extrudate shape. A detailed engineering analysis of pelletizers is performed which accounts for the complex interaction between the fluid mechanics and heat transfer processes in a single die hole. The pelletizer model is solved numerically to obtain velocity, temperature, and pressure profiles. Effect of operating conditions, and polymer rheology on die performance is evaluated and discussed. [Pg.132]

Favorable rheological properties are an essential requirement for the commercialization of polyolefins like polyethylene. The ease of processability of the polymer melt, obtained through modifications in the microstructural features, is as important as the end use mechanical properties of these polymers. Presence of long-chain as well as short-chain branching, LCB and SCB, respectively, more or less dictates the rheological behavior of most commercial... [Pg.139]
