Polymer long-lived

By an extensive study by optical, Raman and photomodulation spectroscopy of samples of polyCPDA and polyDCHD we have been able to recognize that different electronic photoexcitations occur in these polymers. Long-lived metastable bipolaronic states are photogenerated in polyCPDA as inferred from the behaviour of the two PA bands exhibited by this polymer. On the contrary, the PA spectrum of polyDCHD... [Pg.202]

Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) has yielded valuable information about dynamics of long-lived pholoexcitations of conjugated polymers. The technique relies upon the paramagnetic interaction of excitations with an applied magnetic field. For a particle with non-zero spin, placed in a magnetic field, the Hamiltonian is ... [Pg.424]

The above discussion has been based on conventional free-radical catalysis. There has been substantial research on long-lived free radicals that can give a living polymer without the severe cleanliness requirements of anionic polymerizations. Unfortunately, it has not yet had commercial success. [Pg.486]

Evidence indicates [28,29] that in most cases, for organic materials, the predominant intermediate in radiation chemistry is the free radical. It is only the highly localized concentrations of radicals formed by radiation, compared to those formed by other means, that can make recombination more favored compared with other possible radical reactions involving other species present in the polymer [30]. Also, the mobility of the radicals in solid polymers is much less than that of radicals in the liquid or gas phase with the result that the radical lifetimes in polymers can be very long (i.e., minutes, days, weeks, or longer at room temperature). The fate of long-lived radicals in irradiated polymers has been extensively studied by electron-spin resonance and UV spectroscopy, especially in the case of allyl or polyene radicals [30-32]. [Pg.855]

Further experiments were therefore carried out with polar solvents which do not dissolve the polymer. Most striking results were obtained with trichloroacetic acid. The polymerization of acrylonitrile in this solvent was found to proceed under precipitating conditions at all concentrations. In spite of this, the conversion curves were perfectly linear in solutions containing 60 volume per cent monomer or less (18). Moreover, these systems exhibit marked post-polymerization showing the presence of long-lived radicals. [Pg.250]

The dyes with long-lived luminescence are particularly attractive since background fluorescence can easily be discarded in time domain measurements. Crosssensitivity to oxygen may be problematic but it can be minimized by utilizing gas-blocking polymers. For example, Kuemer et al. [15] used the precipitation technique to prepare polyacrylonitrile-based beads doped with a ruthenium(II) complex which showed virtually no cross-sensitivity to oxygen. Copolymers of polyacrylonitrile and polyacrylic acid were used to provide the beads with... [Pg.212]

Note 1 The term halato-telechelic polymer is used to denote a polymer composed of macromolecules having stable (long-lived) ionic or ionizable groups, such as carboxylate... [Pg.206]

Ionic polymerizations are remarkable in the variety of polymer steric structures that are produced by variation of the solvent or the counter ion. The long lived nature of the active chain ends in the anionic polymerization of diene and styrene type monomers lends itself to studies of their structure and properties which might have relevance to the structure of the polymer produced when these chain ends add further monomer. One of the tools that, may be used in the characterization of these ion pairs is the NMR spectrometer. However, it should always be appreciated that, the conditions in the NMR tube are frequently far removed from those in the actual polymerization. Furthermore NMR observes the equilibrium form on a long time scale, and this is not necessarily that form present at the moment of polymerization. [Pg.177]

Synthesis of well defined functionalized (- telechellc or multifunctional-) macromolecules Is an Important task for polymer chemists. The polymers with P0(0R)2, - Si(0R)3, -OH, - . .. functional groupslrS. are produced In limited quantities. The need for polymeric materials possessing specific properties has led to a renewed Interest Is functional polymers, especially if the initial material Is a common hydrocarbon polymer. One of the techniques that we use in our laboratory to prepare these new molecules Is based on anionic processes. This anionic technique is best suited to control the length of the chains prepared and to obtain samples with low polydlsperslty. Although the functionalization of carbanionic sites with various deactivating reagents Is easier than with other methods because of the long lived species, It Is still necessary to carefully control the deactivation reaction to prevent secondary reactions. [Pg.483]
