Thermoplastic polymer composite

However, the growing need for materials that meet specific needs and/or the need for cost reduction, has been pushing the research to develop new materials that meet a market that is becoming more demanding and competitive. Polymer composites thermoplastic or thermosetting plus nanostructured materials have been developed in order to facilitate processing and improve the mechanical properties [5]. [Pg.3]

Currendy, epoxy resins (qv) constitute over 90% of the matrix resin material used in advanced composites. The total usage of advanced composites is expected to grow to around 45,500 t by the year 2000, with the total resin usage around 18,000 t in 2000. Epoxy resins are expected to stiH constitute about 80% of the total matrix-resin-systems market in 2000. The largest share of the remaining market will be divided between bismaleimides and polyimide systems (12 to 15%) and what are classified as other polymers, including thermoplastics and thermoset resins other than epoxies, bismaleimides, cyanate esters, and polyimide systems (see Composites,polymer-matrix-thermoplastics). [Pg.19]

Blends of isobutylene polymers with thermoplastic resins are used for toughening these compounds. High density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene are often modified with 5 to 30 wt % polyisobutylene. At higher elastomer concentration the blends of butyl-type polymers with polyolefins become more mbbery in nature, and these compositions are used as thermoplastic elastomers (98). In some cases, a halobutyl phase is cross-linked as it is dispersed in the polyolefin to produce a highly elastic compound that is processible in thermoplastic mol ding equipment (99) (see Elastomers, synthetic-thermoplastic). ... [Pg.487]

Conducting polymer composites have also been formed by co-electrodeposition of matrix polymer during electrochemical polymerization. Because both components of the composite are deposited simultaneously, a homogenous film is obtained. This technique has been utilized for both neutral thermoplastics such as poly(vinyl chloride) (159), as well as for a large variety of polyelectrolytes (64—68, 159—165). When the matrix polymer is a polyelectrolyte, it serves as the dopant species for the conducting polymer, so there is an intimate mixing of the polymer chains and the system can be appropriately termed a molecular composite. [Pg.39]

However, the relaxation process is rather slow whereas thermoplast processing calls for almost instantaneous cooling of the melt after molding and due to this fact the chain structure is not restored. From this it follows that in molding a conducting polymer composite the cooling of the melt should have a speed comparable to the speed of restoration of the filler secondary structure, otherwise the conductivity of the polymer composite will be reduced. [Pg.138]

Literatures are available on POSS-polymer composites synthesized from different thermoplastics [71-74]. These composites are lightweight and show good fire retardancy, thermal stability, and mechanical reinforcement. Literatures on POSS-rubber composites are yet to come in a big way. [Pg.84]

This research was an attempt to develop new polymers with the mechanical properties of polyarylene ethers and the dielectric properties of fluoropolymers. After initially testing the viability of the [2n+ 2n] cyclodimerization reaction for preparing high-molecular-weight polymers and testing the dielectric properties of these polymers, two polymers (one thermoplastic and one thermoset) were prepared in larger quantities to evaluate the thermal and mechanical performance of these novel compositions. The high Te thermoset was also quantitatively tested for thermal/oxidative stability. [Pg.43]

Saturated complex polyesters, particularly, poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT) are used as engineering thermoplastics possesing good thermo - and wearstability, excellent moulding. These properties also allow to use them as matrix material for polymer composites [1], One of the perspective ways of search of effective catalysts for such systems is kinetic study of the reesterification model reaction, performed in the presence of various catalysts and comparison it with the results of the similar reaction without catalyst. Clarification on the example of model system of the most effective catalysts list allows to use them for obtaining both filled and nonfilled PBT and compare catalytic activity of various catalysts. The purpose of the... [Pg.233]

The development of polymer composites is held back by recycling difficulties, attenuated in the case of the thermoplastic matrices. [Pg.18]
