FDA approved 1998 for the following applications in the manufacture of resin and polymer-based coatings in contact with food, 21CFR175 300 in the manufacture of cellophane for packaging food, 21CFR177.1200. EU (1990) determined Urea acceptable for use in plastic materials in contact with foodstuffs. In 1993 a joint FAO/WHO Committee on food additives determined 3% urea in chewing gum is not toxic. [Pg.36]

One of the most dramatic examples of a biomimetic coating in clinical use is the stent marketed by the Johnson and Johnson Corporation. The stent had a polymer-based coating containing a drug that inhibited the restenosis process. The dnig was released from the polymer at a slow pace over time while the polymer remained on the stent permanently. Results were rather dramatic, with a reduction in the restenosis rate from 40% to 10%. In spite of its success, we should consider that the polymer coat used in this stent might not have been the optimal for the process in consideration. [Pg.409]

Polymer-based coatings are widely used to protect surfaces, to prepare surfaces for further treatments, and to avoid a segregation of phases. ToF-SIMS and contact... [Pg.973]

From the cost point of view, precious metals (such as Au and Pt) are surely out of contention for practical coatings on SS substrates, although they might be used for short laboratory tests. In fact, electrochemical corrosion cells will be generated from the possible pinholes in the coatings due to the electrochemical dissimilarity of the precious metals and SSs in a PEMFC environment. Difficulties encountered with the carbon-based and conductive polymer-based coatings are application at intermediate temperatures, the cold-start issue, and the differences in thermal expansion coefficients between the coating itself and the substrate SS. The risk of... [Pg.372]

To overcome the cost issue especially for high-volume production, low-cost coatings are required which avoid the use of expensive ingredients, without jeopardizing the performance and durability of the bipolar plate. Various materials are known from the literature that implement conductive polymers or polymer-based coatings. Already used in the emerging industry of plastic electronics, stable and intrinsically conductive polymers have been used by various groups to apply a... [Pg.271]
