Polyether ladder-shaped

A diverse array of polyketide metabolites are found in marine organisms, which range from simple oxylipins to highly complex polyethers and macrolides. Particularly intriguing are ladder-shaped polyethers of dinofragellate origin and sponge macrolides. 

A different class of ladder-shaped polyethers, yessotoxins [e.g., yessotoxin 1 (15)], was isolated from toxic scallops again its producer is the dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum (5). The mode of action seems to be different from that of brevetoxins and ciguatoxins. 

Yessotoxins 14 are produced by dinoflagellates of the genera Protoceratium and Gonyaulax. They canse selective disrnption of the E-cadherin-catenin system in epithelial cells (11). In common with the other ladder shaped marine polyethers, yessotoxin interacts with transmembrane helix domains.

Neither of these two amides is toxic for the mouse up to amounts of 5 mg kg via intraperitoneal injection (Miles et al, 2005). In spite of the structural analogy with breve-toxins, yessotoxin and its derivatives do not interfere vnth the sodium channels, and have different toxicological properties. The ladder-shaped polyethers interact vnfh the a-helix of transmembrane proteins in the same way as was established for the desulfated yessotoxin (Mori et al, 2005).
