Polyesters processing

Your company manufactures terephthalic acid, a listed chemical, both for sale/distribution as a commercial product and for on-site use/processino as a feedstock in the polyester process. Because it is a reactant, it is also processed. See Figure D for how this information would be reported in Part III, Section 3 of Form R.

Hydrolytic degradation of polymers is still the main reason for the occurrence of faults in processing. This form of degradation commonly causes a reduction of the IV, associated with a deterioration in the mechanical properties, particularly the tensile strength. Therefore, it is important to ensure sufficient drying of the raw materials. Drying is a crucial prerequisite of any polyester processing... 

Brearley et al" at DuPont (Wilmington, DE, USA) used in-line transmission NIR to monitor carboxyl end groups and degree of polymerization (DP) in PET oligomer and prepolymer melt streams in a new polyester process. The business value was derived from several sources.

In the upcoming sections, the principles of polyester processing will be briefly touched upon. This overview is not exhaustive but should enable the interested reader to navigate through the various options.

Disperse dye carriers are occasionally used in polyester processing in older atmospheric dyeing equipment, and they are also used for repair work on defective dyeings. Components of these are given in Table 7.7 [18, 19]. These are typically released from fabrics during subsequent drying and heat-setting operations. 

The process only differs from the ortho- and isophthalic polyester process as far as the production itself is concerned blending and 13nishing are carried out in the same way for both processes. 

In some continuous processes series of a large number (e.g., 20) of CSTR s are used. The impellers can be adapted to the viscosity in each stage of the process. In the last reactor the desired molecular mass may be controlled by regulating the pressure. This method is applied in some polyester processes the pressure control determines the evaporation of the last traces of ethylene glycol.
