Poly(vinyhdene chloride) (PVDC) film has exceUent barrier properties, among the best of the common films (see Barrier polymers). It is formulated and processed into a flexible film with cling and tacky properties that make it a useful wrap for leftovers and other household uses. As a component in coatings or laminates it provides barrier properties to other film stmctures. The vinyUdene chloride is copolymerized with vinyl chloride, alkyl acrylates, and acrylonitrile to get the optimum processibUity and end use properties (see Vinylidene chloride monomer and polymers). [Pg.378]

Ninety-six percent of the EDC produced in the United States is converted to vinyl chloride for the production of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) (1) (see Vinyl polymers). Chloroform and carbon tetrachloride are used as chemical intermediates in the manufacture of chlorofluorocarbons (CECs). Methjiene chloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene have wide and varied use as solvents. Methyl chloride is used almost exclusively for the manufacture of silicone. Vinylidene chloride is chiefly used to produce poly (vinylidene chloride) copolymers used in household food wraps (see Vinylidene chloride and poly(vinylidene chloride). Chloroben2enes are important chemical intermediates with end use appHcations including disinfectants, thermoplastics, and room deodorants. [Pg.506]

Of interest is the manner in which cavities of the appropriate size are introduced into ion-selective membranes. These membranes typically consist of highly plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (see Membrane technology). Plasticizers (qv) are organic solvents such as phthalates, sebacates, trimelLitates, and organic phosphates of various kinds, and cavities may simply be the excluded volumes maintained by these solvent molecules themselves. More often, however, neutral carrier molecules (20) are added to the membrane. Poly(vinylidene chloride) (XLII) and its copolymers with vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, and acrylates, usually produced by the suspension or emulsion process, are useful as oil, fat, oxygen, and moisture-resistant packaging films (Saran wrap), containers, coatings, tank liners, and monofilaments in drapery fabrics and industrial filter cloths. [Pg.306]

Di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate is a liquid of low volatility, widely used as a plasticizer in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) products, notably food films, as well as in other plastics and in a number of other minor applications, such as lubricants and cosmetics. Occupational exposure may occur by inhalation of di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate as an aerosol during its manufacture and its use. Meat-wrapping workers may be exposed while cutting poly(vinyl chloride) film across a heated cutter. Food is the major source of exposure of the general population to di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate because of migration from poly(vinyl chloride) packaging, particularly into fatty foods such as cheese and meat. [Pg.168]

Two often-used polymers have adequate properties for some applications. Poly(cthylcnc tcrcphthalatc) (PET) is used to make films and bottles. Poly(vinyl cldoride) (PVC) is a moderate barrier to permanent gases. Plasticized poly(vinvl chloride) is used as a household wrapping film.
