Louis-Jacques Thenard, 1777-1857. Professor of chemistry at the Ecole Poly-technique. Discoverer of hydrogen peroxide. Collaborator with Gay-Lussac m his researches on potassium, boron, lodme, and chlorine. He also investigated many fatty acids, esters and ethers... 

Professor of chemistry at the ficole Poly-technique and at the Jardin des Plantes. With Thenard, he prepared potassium without the use of a battery, and isolated boron. In 1809 Gay-Lussac enunciated his famous law of combining volumes of gases.

Jouguet, (Jacques-Charles) Emile (1871 — 1943). French physicist, general inspector of mines and professor of mechanics ficole des Mine, ficole Poly technique, member French Academy of Science (1930). He was the author of Me-canique des Explosifs (1917) and conducted research on wave diffusion, movement of fluids, explosives and fundamental work on the hydro-dynamic theory of detonation. His name is associated with that of Chapman-in the famous Chapman-Jouguet condition. In their honor parameters of a steady detonation wave are usually designated by the subscript CJ...

TLC is the preferred separation method because of its high separation efficiency, rapidity, and large variety of detection possibilities. Usually 0.5 mm thick silica-gel-G-plates are used, activated at 120°C for 30 min. in a supersaturated atmosphere. Well-known of poly techniques such as multiple separation in opposite or parallel direction allow the selectivities to be further increased. The selection of an appropriate mobile phases determines the efficiency of separation. Advantage is taken of specific interactions and also of reactivity with the stabilizers under investigation.

Gaspard Gustav de Coriolis (1792 — 1843), was a French engineer and matheinaticjan and director of the Ecole Poly technique in Paris. In 1835, Coriolis introduced the notion of work, the equivalence of work and energy, and also a coupling of rotation and vibration.

Martin, Archer John Porter (pp. 52, 54, Plate 31) born in 1910 in London, studied chemistry in Cambridge (Ph.D.) worked there in the physical chemical laboratory on nutritional research, then in the Wool Institute Leeds until 1946. Member of staff of the Medical Research Council, director Natl. Inst. Medical Res., Mill Hill (until 1956), later various professorships, e.g. cole poly technique, Lausanne 1980-1983. Nobel Prize in chemistry 1952, shared with R.L.M. Synge with whom he worked in Leeds on chromatographic methods. 

Civilian chemists also worked for the Artillery. Some, like most Artillery officers, received their training at the Ecole Poly technique. Thus, in 1908, the Polytechnicien Ernest Berger, who had shown ability as a laboratory chemist, was assigned to the Laboratoire de la Commission des Poudres de Versailles. Before mobilization, the Laboratoire de Chimie de la Section Technique de I Artillerie (LSTA) had four civilian chemists and ten military chemists, all working seven hours a day. Two additional chemists were requested, and three years later, by June 1917, the laboratory had fourteen civilian and five military chemists. Although the number of studies before the war averaged only about one per month, by 1916 this had...
