The chemical modification of poly (vinyl chloroformate) and its copolymers has been also studied. Treatment of such polymers with amines, alcohols and phenols affords the corresponding poly (vinyl urethanes) and poly (vinyl carbonates) (Ref. 138, 139). Poly (mixed anhydrides) have been also prepared by chemical modification of poly (vinyl chloroformate) by carboxylic acids under various conditions (Ref. 140, 141, 142). [Pg.147]

Many of these reactions are reversible, and for the stronger nucleophiles they usually proceed the fastest. Typical examples are the addition of ammonia, amines, phosphines, and bisulfite. Alkaline conditions permit the addition of mercaptans, sulfides, ketones, nitroalkanes, and alcohols to acrylamide. Good examples of alcohol reactions are those involving polymeric alcohols such as poly(vinyl alcohol), cellulose, and starch. The alkaline conditions employed with these reactions result in partial hydrolysis of the amide, yielding mixed carbamojdethyl and carboxyethyl products. [Pg.133]

Lead azide is not readily dead-pressed, ie, pressed to a point where it can no longer be initiated. However, this condition is somewhat dependent on the output of the mixture used to ignite the lead azide and the degree of confinement of the system. Because lead azide is a nonconductor, it may be mixed with flaked graphite to form a conductive mix for use in low energy electric detonators. A number of different types of lead azide have been prepared to improve its handling characteristics and performance and to decrease sensitivity. In addition to the dextrinated lead azide commonly used in the United States, service lead azide, which contains a minimum of 97% lead azide and no protective colloid, is used in the United Kingdom. Other varieties include colloidal lead azide (3—4 pm), poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated lead azide, and British RE) 1333 and RE) 1343 lead azide which is precipitated in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose (88—92). [Pg.10]

Fully modified yams had smooth, all-skin cross sections, a stmcture made up of numerous small crystaUites of cellulose, and filament strengths around 0.4 N/tex (4.5 gf/den). They were generally known as the Super tire yams. Improved Super yams (0.44—0.53 N/tex (5—6 gf/den)) were made by mixing modifiers, and one of the best combiaations was found to be dimethylamine with poly-(oxyethylene) glycol of about 1500 mol wt (25). Ethoxjlated fatty acid amines have now largely replaced dimethylamine because they are easier to handle and cost less. [Pg.349]

Mixed Metal Antimony Synergists Worldwide scarcities of antimony have prompted manufacturers to develop synergists that contain less antimony. Other metals have been found to work in concert with antimony to form a synergist that is as effective as antimony alone. Thermoguard CPA from Elf Atochem NA, which contains zinc in addition to antimony, can be used instead of antimony oxide in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as well as some polyolefin appHcations. The Oncor and AZ products which contain siUcon, zinc, and phosphoms from Anzon Inc. can be used in a similar manner. The mixed metal synergists are 10 to 20% less expensive than antimony trioxide. [Pg.455]

Poly(vinyl acetate). The dielectric and mechanical spectra of hybrids produced by mixing a poly(vinyl acetate)—THE solution with TEOS, followed by the addition of HCl have been investigated (45). Mixtures were made which were beheved to be 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt % Si02, respectively. These composites were transparent and Eourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir) revealed hydrogen bonding between the siUcate network and carbonyl units of the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). The chemical resistance and excellent light stabiUty of poly(methyl methacrylate) compared to two other transparent plastics is illustrated in Table 5 (25). Methacrylates readily depolymerize with high conversion, ie, 95%, at >300° C (1,26). Methyl methacrylate monomer can be obtained in high yield from mixed polymer materials, ie, scrap. [Pg.262]

Uses. Phthabc anhydride is used mainly in plasticizers, unsaturated polyesters, and alkyd resins (qv). PhthaUc plasticizers consume 54% of the phthahc anhydride in the United States (33). The plasticizers (qv) are used mainly with poly(vinyl chloride) to produce flexible sheet such as wallpaper and upholstery fabric from normally rigid polymers. The plasticizers are of two types diesters of the same monohydric alcohol such as dibutyl phthalate, or mixed esters of two monohydric alcohols. The largest-volume plasticizer is di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [117-81-7] which is known commercially as dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and is the base to which other plasticizers are compared. The important phthahc acid esters and thek physical properties are Hsted in Table 12. The demand for phthahc acid in plasticizers is naturally tied to the growth of the flexible poly(vinyl chloride) market which is large and has been growing steadily. [Pg.485]

When equal amounts of solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(acryhc acid) ate mixed, a precipitate, which appears to be an association product of the two polymers, forms immediately. This association reaction is influenced by hydrogen-ion concentration. Below ca pH 4, the complex precipitates from solution. Above ca pH 12, precipitation also occurs, but probably only poly(ethylene oxide) precipitates. If solution viscosity is used as an indication of the degree of association, it appears that association becomes mote pronounced as the pH is reduced toward a lower limit of about four. The highest yield of insoluble complex usually occurs at an equimolar ratio of ether and carboxyl groups. Studies of the poly(ethylene oxide)—poly(methacryhc acid) complexes indicate a stoichiometric ratio of three monomeric units of ethylene oxide for each methacrylic acid unit. [Pg.342]

The bonding properties of (Ti02) have been used for size-reinforcing of glass fibers so that they adhere to asphalt or to a PTEE—polysulfide mixture to impart enhanced flex endurance (434—436). In contrast to other polymers the resistance to water permeation is low due to the hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl acetate) (163,164). Ethylene copolymers have been developed which have improved water resistance and waterproofness. The polymer can be used in the latex form or in a spray-dried form which can be preblended in with the cement (qv) in the proper proportion. The compressive and tensile strength of concrete is improved by addition of PVAc emulsions to the water before mixing. A polymer-soHds-to-total-soHds ratio of ca 10 90 is best. The emulsions also aid adhesion between new and old concrete when patching or resurfacing. [Pg.471]
