Poly iodine Interactions

Poly-/ -phenylene (10) takes iodine up rather weakly, and the data indicate very little interaction. 

Recently, we observed that the PDA from l,6-di-N-carbazolyl-2,4-hexadiyne (2a), i.e., poly-DCH (2), reacts with assorted gaseous and liquid species to give modified materials which appear homogeneous on microscopic examination (1). Our studies to date of the interaction of chlorine, bromine, and iodine with single crystals of poly-DCH are presented herein. 

A great stmctural variety of solid and liquid polyiodides has been demonstrated in [1]. This review covers research activities related to the chemistry of poly iodide for the period from 1970 to 2002. The formation of anions containing more than one molecule of iodine is considered as resulting from the interaction between the components of basic building blocks (F, I2, Is ). 

The composition calculated for a maximum packing density in terms of Fig. 6 and 7 coincides very well the analytical data of the polymer oxidized to its optimum conductivity. Some workers in the field favour an alteirnative structural model which consists again of sheets of polymer chains but with the zig-zag-plane in the plane of the sheet. This model is based on the assumption that there will be an appreciable interaction between the TT-electrons of the chain and the counterions, notably with I -ions in the case of iodine-oxidized poly(aceSylene).,48,49 the same time this model negates appreciable electronic interactions between adjacent chains. 

Potentiometric sensors responsive to iodide ion that are based on iodine-doped poly(3-methylthiophene) have been demonstrated [214,215]. Potentiometric sensors, because of the wide range of possible potential-influencing interactions [216], offer no major advantages over conventional functionalized nonconducting polymer membranes.
