The quote is from the third volume of Henri Poincare s New Methods of Celestial Mechanics, and is a description of his discovery of homoclinic orbits (see below) in the restricted three-body problem. It is also one of the earliest recorded formal observations that very complicated behavior may be found even in seemingly simple classical Hamiltonian systems. Although Hamiltonian (or conservative) chaos often involves fractal-like phase-space structures, the fractal character is of an altogether different kind from that arising in dissipative systems. An important common thread in the analysis of motion in either kind of dynamical system, however, is that of the stability of orbits. [Pg.188]

More radically, it can be argued that chemists recognized before most physicists the conventional character of the basic definitions and premises of scientific explanation systems, an argument usually identified in physics with Heinrich Hertz, Henri Poincare, and Edouard LeRoy at the end of the nineteenth century. And finally, chemists recognized early on that multiple explanations are superior to a simple but wrong explanation. In short, chemistry had a principle of complementarity long before physics did. [Pg.90]

In this case, we do know of two exceptions to this rule see especially Henderson, Fourth Dimension, and Adcock. Non-esoteric publications by the math-ematicians Maurice Princet and Henri Poincare were often mentioned by various avant-garde artists, including Duchamp, who had fourth-dimensional interests before WW 1. We have, however, no reason whatsoever to suppose that any artists ever actually read their difficult publications. Moreover, nearly everything these artists actually said or wrote about their interests in this kind of hyper- or pseudogeometry indicates the fact of their artistic, nonmathematical, and largely metaphysical approaches to the problematic. [Pg.412]

During the four years of her student life, she lived in a chilly little attic room, carrying the coal herself up the six flights of stairs, and cooking her simple meals over an alcohol lamp. This was Marie Sklodowska s introduction to the city which became her permanent home (4, 68). When she enrolled at the Sorbonne, Henri Poincare, the famous mathematical physicist, soon recognized her ability, and Professor Gabriel Lippmann also took great interest in her research. [Pg.804]

At the beginning of the twentiest century, the French mathematician, Henri Poincare, found that the solution of certain coupled nonlinear differential equations exhibits chaotic behavior although the underlying laws were fully deterministic. He pointed out that two systems starting with slightly different initial conditions would, after some time, move into very different directions. Since empirical observations are never exact in the mathematical sense but bear a finite error of measurement, the behavior of such systems could not be predicted beyond a certain point these systems seem to be of random nature. A random process - in contrast to a deterministic process - is characterized by From A follows B with probability pB, C with probability pc etc. [Pg.782]

The theory of quanta has been a central preoccupation of the Solvay Conference since the first Solvay Conference on Physics, which took place in 1911. On that occasion, the fundamental discrepancies between classical theory and experimental data, which appeared at the beginning of the century, were discussed by major figures of modem science like Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Henri Poincare, and many others. [Pg.2]
