PMTDI

For contaminants and naturally occurring toxicants, levels corresponding to tolerable intakes such as the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI) or provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) are established when there is an identifiable no-observed-effect level, that is, a threshold of effect can be assumed based on available data. When a noobserved-effect level cannot be identified, the Committee provides other advice, such as identification of the food(s) that contributes most to intake. This allows for targeted management actions in order to decrease exposure. [Pg.1472]

MTDI = maximum tolerable daily intake, or provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI) a term used for description of the end point of contaminants with no cumulative properties. Its value represents permissible human exposure as a result of the natural occurrence of the substance in food or drinking water. In the case of trace elements that are both essential nutrients and unavoidable constituents of food, a range is expressed, the lower value representing the level of essentiality and the upper value the PMTDI. [Pg.65]

PMTDI (Provisional Maximum Tolerable Daily Intake) A provisional estimate of the amount of a hazardous substance with no cumulative properties in food or drinking water, expressed on a body-weight basis, that can be ingested daily over a lifetime without appreciable health risk. [Pg.1500]

A summary of the PTWI-, PMTDI-, and PDDR-values for metals and metal compounds, as recommended by the Joint FAO/Expert Committee on Food Additives is presented in Table 1.1. [Pg.1500]

The Committee concluded that sodium iron EDTA is suitable for use as a source of iron for food fortification to fulfil the nutritional iron requirements, provided that the total intake of iron from all food sources including contaminants does not exceed the PMTDI of 0.8 mg/kg bw (Annex 1, reference 62). Additionally, the total intake of EDTA should not exceed acceptable levels, also taking into account the intake of EDTA from the food additive use of other EDTA compounds. An ADI of 0-2.5 mg/kg bw was previously established for the calcium disodium and disodium salts of EDTA, equivalent to up to 1.9 mg EDTA/kg bw (Annex 1, reference 32). A preliminary exposure assessment based on suggested levels of fortification for sodium iron EDTA indicates that the intake of EDTA in infants and children up to the age of 13 already is at or exceeds the upper limit of the ADI for EDTA. [Pg.143]
