This review of work on additives to the positive plate shows that a variety of effects can be achieved. The choice of additives is very dependent on the intended application and corresponding battery requirements. Additives that enhance material utilization and/or reduce plate weight may be desirable for batteries in electric vehicles, where high specific energy is required. In automotive batteries. 

Transportation of pasted plates in the tunnel dryer results not only in removal of excess moisture from the paste, but also in drying the plate surfaces. Thus sticking of plates to one another is avoided when they are arranged in piles (stacked). At the outlet of the tunnel dryer the plates have a temperature of 40—45 °C and moisture content 9.5%. They are then piled (stacked) on palettes to be transported to and loaded into the curing chamber. The controlled parameters of the plates after drying are plate weight, moisture content of the paste and paste density. 

Only very few recent papers have been published in which new development of substrate treatments were reported. Absorption time is the time needed to absorb a certain amount of fluid, which is strongly correlated to the probability of leakage. In this test, a diaper is laid with the backsheet side on a polyurethane-foam base and covered with a cover plate. Weights are placed on the cover plate to simulate the weight of a baby lying on the diaper. Because of the foam base, pressure is distributed equally across the diaper. The cover plate has a hole which is placed over the area where the diaper typically absorbs urine. An application tube containing an electrode connected to a computer is mounted over that hole. A set amount of synthetic urine is pumped into the application tube, and with the help of the electrode the time is measured until all liquid in the tube is absorbed by the diaper. This is repeated three to four times to simulate the repeated urination of a baby. Results are recorded as absorption rates, that is, volume per time (mL/s).
