Description The spiral-plate heat exchanger (SHE) may be one exchanger selec ted primarily on its virtues and not on its initial cost. SHEs offer high reliability and on-line performance in many severely fouling seiwices such as slurries.

Plate heat exchangers are used extensively in the food and beverage industries, as they can be readily taken apart for cleaning and inspection. Their use in the chemical industry will depend on the relative cost for the particular application compared with a conventional shell and tube exchanger see Parker (1964) and Trom (1990). 

The costs for this form of exchanger are higher than those for gasketed plate heat exchangers. An important limitation is that they can only be cleaned chemically and not mechanically. 

In addition to the harmonization of the underlying physical and chemical processes, the catalytic-plate heat exchanger offers a cost-effective alternative to both conventional multitubular reactors and catalytic microreactors for industrial... 

Another aspect is the low catalyst mass per unit reactor volume that can be introduced into the plate heat-exchanger reactor. This drawback is counterbalanced by much better utilization of the catalyst owing to the improved heat and mass transfer. Consequently, more active catalysts are required which compensate the lower mass. At the same time, the cost of the catalyst is less of an issue compared with, for example, fixed-bed reactor technology. These statements will be confirmed by a practical example below. 

Few reports address the challenges of mass production of the fuel processors. Work at IMM in Mainz, Germany has resulted in an assessment of costs associated with production runs of 1(X) 000 units per annum for a heat exchanger reactor for a fuel processor (Kolb et al., 2007). Catalyst cost may play a significant role in the overall fuel processor cost and could reach values as high as 38% [633]. In this situation, tailor-made catalyst formulations of enhanced activity are required along with meastues to increase the utilisation of the catalyst. This may be achieved by coating the catalyst into small channel systems of ceramic or metallic monoliths or into microstructured plate heat-exchangers, which improves the mass transfer, as described in Chapter 6.
