Another aspect of plasticity is the time dependent progressive deformation under constant load, known as creep. This process occurs when a fiber is loaded above the yield value and continues over several logarithmic decades of time. The extension under fixed load, or creep, is analogous to the relaxation of stress under fixed extension. Stress relaxation is the process whereby the stress that is generated as a result of a deformation is dissipated as a function of time. Both of these time dependent processes are reflections of plastic flow resulting from various molecular motions in the fiber. As a direct consequence of creep and stress relaxation, the shape of a stress—strain curve is in many cases strongly dependent on the rate of deformation, as is illustrated in Figure 6. [Pg.271]

It is important to differentiate between brittie and plastic deformations within materials. With brittie materials, the behavior is predominantiy elastic until the yield point is reached, at which breakage occurs. When fracture occurs as a result of a time-dependent strain, the material behaves in an inelastic manner. Most materials tend to be inelastic. Figure 1 shows a typical stress—strain diagram. The section A—B is the elastic region where the material obeys Hooke s law, and the slope of the line is Young s modulus. C is the yield point, where plastic deformation begins. The difference in strain between the yield point C and the ultimate yield point D gives a measure of the brittieness of the material, ie, the less difference in strain, the more brittie the material. [Pg.138]

It is an unfortunate fact that many students and indeed design engineers are reluctant to get involved with plastics because they have an image of complicated materials with structures described by complex chemical formulae. In fact it is not necessary to have a detailed knowledge of the structure of plastics in order to make good use of them. It has been shown throughout this chapter that the properties of plastics are dependent on time. In Chapter 1 the dependence of properties on temperature was also highlighted. The latter is more important for plastics than it would be for metals because even modest temperature changes below 100°C can have a significant effect on properties. Clearly it is not reasonable to expect creep curves and other physical property data to be available at all temperatures. If information is available over an appropriate range of temperatures then it may be possible to attempt some type of interpolation. For example, if creep curves are available at 20°C and 60°C whereas the service temperature is 40°C then a linear interpolation would provide acceptable design data. [Pg.116]

In this method appropriate values of such time-dependent properties as the modulus are selected and substituted into the standard equations. When water (a Newtonian liquid) is in an open-ended pipe, pressure can be applied to move it. Doubling the water pressure doubles the flow rate of the water. Water does not have a shear-thinning action. However, in a similar situation but using a plastic melt (a non-Newtonian liquid), if the pressure is doubled the melt flow may increase from 2 to 15 times, depending on the plastic used. As an example, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), with a low shear-thinning action, experiences a low rate increase, which explains why it can cause more processing problems than other PEs. The present review shows how the microhardness technique can be used to elucidate the dependence of a variety of local deformational processes upon polymer texture and morphology. Microhardness is a rather elusive quantity, that is really a combination of other mechanical properties. It is most suitably defined in terms of the pyramid indentation test. Hardness is primarily taken as a measure of the irreversible deformation mechanisms which characterize a polymeric material, though it also involves elastic and time dependent effects which depend on microstructural details. In isotropic lamellar polymers a hardness depression from ideal values, due to the finite crystal thickness, occurs. The interlamellar non-crystalline layer introduces an additional weak component which contributes further to a lowering of the hardness value. Annealing effects and chemical etching are shown to produce, on the contrary, a significant hardening of the material. The prevalent mechanisms for plastic deformation are proposed.
