Plasticating barrel

Volatile There are plastics that contain small quantities of material that boil at processing temperatures, or they may be contaminated by water absorbed from the atmosphere. These volatiles may cause bubbles, a scarred surface, and other defects. Processing methods of removing volatiles are used such as drying materials to be processed, vented plasticator barrels, etc. (Chapter 7, OTHER BEHAVIOR, Drying Plastic). [Pg.453]

Figure 25. Disposable hypodennic syringe was made possible by the availability of medical grade silicone fluid to lubricate the plunger. Without an appropriate lubricant it would be essentially impossible to move the plunger tip inside the molded plastic barrel. Silicone fluid does not deteriorate with time, thus syringes may be stored for long periods of time without change in the forces required to move the plunger within the barrel. Figure 25. Heat is usually applied in various amounts and in different locations, whether in a metal plasticating barrel (extrusion, injection molding, etc.) or in a metal mold/die (compression, injection, thermoforming, extrusion, etc.). With barrels a thermocouple is usually embedded in the metal to send a signal to a temperature controller. In turn, it controls the electric power output device regulating the power to the heater bands in different zones of the barrel. The placement of the thermocouple temperature sensor is extremely important. The heat flow in any medium sets up a temperature gradient in that medium, just as the flow of water in a pipe sets up a pressure drop, and the flow of electricity in a wire causes a voltage drop. [Pg.15]

A series of pressure transducers can be installed in the extruder barrel to determine the axial fluid pressure profiles located at various positions in the kneading blocks. Without the option of a transparent plastic barrel, one can measure the buildup of fluid pressure before downstream flow restriction and thereby determine the backup length L. [Pg.360]

Barrel feed housing Component of the plasticator barrel that contains the feed opening, water heating and/or cooling channels, and in certain units, contains barrel grooving to improve flow of plastics into the screw flights. If required a thermal barrier is used that is attached to the barrel. [Pg.496]

Vent purifier The exhaust from vented plasticating barrels can show a dramatic cloud of swirling white gas almost all of it is condensed steam proving that the vent is doing its job. However, a small portion of the vent exhaust can be other materials such as by-products released by certain plastics and/or additives and could be of concern to plant personnel safety and/or plant equipment. Purifiers can be attached (with or without vacuum hoods located over the vent opening) to remove and collect the steam and other products. The purifiers include electronic precipitators. [Pg.543]

Once macroscopic sliding has started, two different events can take place. Firstly, the stopper can continue to move, most likely with some constant deformation resulting from a balance between elastomeric properties of the stopper material and lubricant properties of the fnctional contact. In this case, no stick-slip motion is observed but smooth continuous sliding of the stopper inside the plastic barrel takes place. Secondly, during release of the defonnation imposed on the stopper during the initial stick phase, the relative velocity in the stopper/barrel interface can drop to a very low value or can even reach zero. In this event the stopper will stick a un and the above described process will be repeated. In this case stick-slip motion is observed (Table I). [Pg.488]

A second flow visualization study of fluid motions was published by Armstroff and Zettler [ 106] in 1973. The authors put the modular screws of a Werner and Pfieiderer ZSK into a transparent plastic barrel and investigated the motions of the process fluid. They observed alternative regions of filled and starved channels kneading disc blocks were generally fuUy... [Pg.255]

Solid chemical agents (e.g. Clark) removed from the opened shells are likewise delivered in plastic barrels, although only small amounts of them can be treated in the first incineration plant. [Pg.64]

Blow moulding produces fairly good surface finish as for many items there is no further surface finishing necessary. Familiar products manufactured by blow moulding include drinks bottles, shampoo bottles, water dmms and plastic barrels. The plastics that are used in blow moulding include low density polyethylene (LDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). [Pg.413]
