In natural conditions, Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogeton pectinatus L. have been found to be effective adsorbents of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption percentage of the metals onto plant surfaces followed the pattern Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II). P. pectinatus biomass adsorbed a higher content of heavy metals than C. demersum. According to the results, both species are of interest in the phytoremediation and biomonitoring studies of polluted waters.122... [Pg.401]

With respect to worker safety and re-entry studies, reference substances are necessary to assay the test substance (and, if applicable, any control substance) and determine its stability and for the analyses of specimens collected in the study. Specimens may include plant material (dislodgeable residues), adsorbent media (inhalation), or clothing/dosimeter materials collected during a worker safety study to assess exposure. If biomonitoring is involved, blood and/or urine specimens may be analyzed against reference substances of known purity. [Pg.155]

The use of lower plants as biomonitors has recently been detailed. Garty (1993) has extensively reviewed the use of lichens as biomonitors the use of fungi has been reviewed by Mejstfik and Lepsova (1993) and by Wondratschek and Rfider (1993) and mosses as biomonitors have been discussed by Steinnes (1993) and by Brtining and Kreeb (1993) the effects of heavy metals on bryophytes has been reviewed by Tyler (1990). [Pg.236]
